Everybody says here’s what you need to do…but no one seems to really tell you how to do it. This is the number one complaint I get about counsellors in therapy. Great listener…no tools. I’m told how to conceptualize something, but not how to actually put theory into practice. So here:
Meditation: pick up The Science of Mindfulness. It’s only available on audible or as a pack of CDs for like $200.00. It’s a Great Course so it’s likely there too. The thing about mindfulness…it’s some scary s**t to look inwards at first. That space is usually pretty messy by the time someone comes to sit down in my office. So when you’re just starting out with mindfulness, to make it less intimidating, start with an externally based practice like grounding (I use colours but the worksheet says senses, make it your own. 5 things that are blue, 4 that are green, 3 that are yellow, 2 that are red, 1 that is purple. You can also pick whatever colours you want honestly). Or just try using all five of your senses on a walking meditation to really tune into the things we normally dismiss in life. Stop and smell the roses so to speak. Orr, count your steps, or focus on what it feels like to have your feet hit the pavement as you walk. Also…anything can be a meditative practice. I pull weeds as a meditation (my neighbours will tell you that must be the only time I’m quietly working in my yard). You can practice mindfulness washing dishes even. Focus on the feel of the dishes, the water, the soap, etc. and food…do you really know the essence of an orange all that well? Take the time to slowly and purposefully experience an orange with all five of your senses. You can even lick it…although I promise the rind does not taste good. This is a meticulous practice by the way. To notice all the things you can about an orange…but…when your done…check in and see what, if anything, is different about your state of mind and body after taking in the essence of that orange. My guess…you’ll feel lighter, freer, clearer. Try it and let me know how it goes! ⬇️
