A recent Mayo Clinic Proceedings study highlighted in Verywell Health shows that chronic financial stress may be as harmful to heart health as well-known risk factors like high blood pressure and smoking. Researchers analyzed data from over 280,000 adults and found that financial strain and food insecurity were the strongest social factors linked to accelerated cardiac aging — when the heart’s biological age is older than a person’s actual age, increasing risk for heart attack and stroke.

Experts explain that long-term money worries keep stress hormones like cortisol elevated, contributing to higher blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, and systemic inflammation — all processes tied to heart disease. She introduces the 80/20 rule: if you’re making solid choices about 80% of the time, you’re doing well. That applies to food — and to life. Consistency beats perfection.
