Jennifer "Jen" Lee Tompkins
April 14, 1975 - January 13, 2026

Jennifer “Jen” Lee Tompkins passed away peacefully surrounded by family on January 13, 2026, in Creston, BC at the age of 50 after a short battle with cancer.

Jen, or Jennie as she was known by friends and family, was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta on an acreage where she had many pets, including horses, cats, hamsters, budgies, fish, a hermit crab and a pair of geese. As an animal lover, she became a vegetarian at a young age. She was always doing something in the kitchen, even as a small child, and was a marvellous cook and baker.

In her twenties, she attended UNBC to study environmental science, worked in tree planting camps in northern BC and travelled the world. She spent a year in Australia, cycled through Central America, and did a solo bike trip through Southeast Asia. She came back to Calgary to do a certificate in herbalism at Mount Royal College, where she excelled.

She moved to the Kootenays in 2008, living first in Kaslo, where she worked in the kitchen at the Bluebell Café, then in Meadow Creek at an off-grid cabin often visited by grizzly bears. Coming to Calgary on a visit during that time, she showed her horrified mother a bruise on her hip from the recoil of the shotgun she had been using to chase grizzlies away from the carrots in the garden. Most recently she lived in Crawford Bay where she worked at Red’s Café. In recent years she developed a passion for photography. Her favourite subjects included her pets, the mountains and landscape around Kootenay Lake, the northern lights, wild plants and tiny
creatures. She lived the most natural lifestyle possible, enjoyed walking in the forest with her animals, hunting mushrooms, growing vegetables, and spending time with her family and friends. She was an incredibly kind person, and she was kind and loving to the end.

Jen was predeceased by her father, Brad Tompkins, and her grandparents Gordon and Jessie Miller.

She is survived by her mother, Jeanne Tompkins, her sister Amy (Will) Tompkins, her brother Joe Chisholm, her nieces Lola Crossman, Sadie Crossman and Kelsey Chisholm, her nephew Kyle Chisholm, and many aunts, uncles and cousins, as well as many dear friends. She is also survived by her beloved pets, Ned the dog and cats Callie and Wesley.

There will be a celebration of life for Jen in the spring in Crawford Bay.

Memorial donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or an animal-related charity of one’s choice.

Philip (Phil) George Kemle
January 1, 1935 - January 1, 2026

Philip (Phil) George Kemle, passed away on his 91st birthday, January 1, 2026. As the baby of the family, he was the surviving member of 6 siblings; Julie, Frank, Peter, John, and David, and his parents Philip and Christina Kemle.

He was born in Calgary, AB, and as a young lad, the family moved to Sumas Prairie, BC, where he eventually found the love of his life, Donna Lowther, and four children were soon to be.

The dairy farm business was filled with hard work and long hours, but he was always able to find the time to horse around with his children and play games with family and friends.

With the mindset of ‘Jack of All Trades - Master of None’, he transitioned from farmer to businessman flawlessly. In 1984 he opened the doors to Kemlee Equipment / Kokanee Ford, and he gave back to countless community initiatives throughout his years in business.

His ‘Use It, or Lose It’ attitude found him playing, coaching, and supporting badminton, ice hockey, ping pong, golf, and pickleball - with many awards to show for it.

After retirement, the Southwest called, where Phil & Donna found themselves hooked up with the ‘Creston Party’ circuit in Yuma, AZ. Happy hour was a near daily event, and their friend circle grew extensively while they enjoyed group created events like howling at the moon, bean bag tournaments, and card nights with the help of Mrs. Bones.

Philip will be missed and celebrated by his immediate family, and wife of 68 years. Donna, and sons, Mike (Shelley), Ken (Shelly), Darrell (Kelly), and daughter Shelly (Darwin), along with numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends made along the way.

A Life Well Lived.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Tuesday January 13, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at the Canyon Community Hall.

In lieu of flowers, friends wishing to make a memorial contribution may do so to the charity of their choice.

Helen Lorraine McMichael
July 26, 1924 - November 14, 2025

At the age of 101, Helen Lorraine McMichael passed away on November 14, 2025, at Swan Valley Lodge in Creston, BC.

She was born July 26, 1924, in Nanaimo, BC, a daughter of the late David and Bertha Phillips. Helen and her family moved to Victoria, BC area in 1930 where she married in 1950 and subsequently raised a family. She was a teacher in the Victoria School District for over 20 years.

In 1983, Helen, now a widow, ventured out on her own. The Creston Valley, with its picturesque farmland and abundance of gardens, became her choice as a new home. Although she did some volunteer work, her real passion in life was for watercolour painting. She painted with the Creston art clubs and with a group of friends in Bonners Ferry, ID.

Helen walked almost everyday to maintain her health. She did this until she became totally blind, due to glaucoma, at the age of 99.
Helen will be remembered mostly for the paintings she created and for her quick wit. Her favourite saying was “Love many, trust few, but always paddle your own canoe.” Without a doubt she lived up to that old adage.

Helen was predeceased by her husband, William McMichael in 1981, son David in 1979, and two sisters Eva and Bertha.

She is survived by her daughter Brenna (Robert) Cull of Creston, grandson Daniel Cull of Calgary, granddaughter Montana (Regan) Spetifore of Calgary, and great granddaughter Lily Spetifore of Calgary.

At the family’s request, there will be no service at this time.

In lieu of flowers, friends wishing to make a memorial contribution may do so to the Creston Public Library, 531 16th Ave South, Creston, BC V0B 1G0. Helen enjoyed listening to many of the library’s audio books when she could no longer see.

The family would like to thank Helen’s friend Donna Faber for visiting her so frequently over the years. Also, thank you to the wonderful staff at Swan Valley Lodge, who patiently and professionally cared for her over the past two years. Dr. Chang, her doctor of only a month, deserves a huge thank you for going above and beyond in making Helen’s quality of life more comfortable.
