First week done and dusted.

Well done parents! (and kids) for smoothly navigating new rhythms and transitions, and if they weren’t all so smooth then still celebrate your ability to reflect and make changes next week.

As sports get rolling, athlete parents remember to take care of your health, between all the chauffeuring, meal prep, team snap, Demosphere, game changer, uniform ordering and spectating….. make some time for you!

While your little athlete practices, do you spectate? Or could you steal a moment to yourself? What sort of goals do you have that could be accomplished in 2-3 one hour sessions each week that perfectly align with your little one’s activity?

This is your reminder to get out of the car…. Myself included, and start a healthy weekly routine. If scrolling insta fills your boots, so be it. But I bet you’ll be so much happier after a long walk, a dose of meditation, or a fun circuit session.

Happy first week of September.

Not so slow and simple today. Or yesterday. Or any day this year really.

Yes those are my PJs, as I held myself hostage today until my final paper was complete.

The mindful walks I’ve shared with you have been heavenly pauses from my oh so busy days. The breaks I hold onto and cherish when my heart rate is spiking at work.

That’s a wrap on my first full year (summer included!) of multitasking a Masters in Counselling Psychology, working as a 911 operator, parenting 3 amazing humans, and grasping sometimes unsuccessfully at the relationships that hold me steady.

I like slow, unhurried days…. But this is a busy season of life. I don’t love it, but it feels essential to be able to live an holistic, unhurried, fulfilling life for many decades to come.

And now I will walk, slowly… until September comes ❤️

What I didn’t show you in my beautiful hiking video……

Parenting is not all alpine meadows and panoramic views…. In RL big boy woke up quite sick yesterday so we decided to split and let papa bear have his bday wish of sleeping in the backcountry with some of the fam.

I took over the much-reduced Sherpa load of food that the strong 15y old boy was supposed to carry and hiked 8.5k up with them.

Then I had a peaceful, slightly anxiety-inducing solo hike down with a whining pup in tow (he does not like it when the group splits or he also thought he was about to be inhaled by a cougar).

Since then I’ve sat around hoping for the bear cub to emerge, impatiently waiting at the door for 15 hours while he slept peacefully. Spent $$ hundreds of dollars on a dark hotel room, soft foods and pain killers.

Two lessons I’ve taken away from this,

1) Life doesn’t always go as planned but still try to find the positives.

Thankfully, I like soft beds, hot tubs and hotel rooms. I needed some R and R so am taking this as an opportunity to catch up on lying around and doing some school work, overdue decision making, reflection and goal setting.

2) Don’t believe the internet. What you see is just a momentary glimpse, don’t let your envy and admiration go too far. Instead remember to look for snapshots of goodness in your own story.

Please send healing thoughts our way. We have a flight to catch in t minus 4 days, but who’s counting 😫😫😫😫🤣

Nothing is as liberating as carrying everything you need on your back.

This is a very popular trail, a perfect spot for a kid’s first overnighter. Starting in the aptly named, paradise meadows and gradually climbing up past several swimming lakes and camping pads, bear caches and outhouses….. best part, leashed dogs allowed!

Too lovely to not share all three videos… can you name this trail?

Scanning the horizon has been shown to reduce stress and promote feelings of calmness.

In RL may be best, but I can’t help but wonder if watching videos of beautiful walks can also be beneficial?

These hidden/not so hidden?? spots right in the city continue to amaze me.

When you follow a 12 year old you find special places.

Snow to surf 2025 was a success!

A true test of logistics, organizational prowess, artistic creativity and, of course, athleticism.

The vast outdoor options and natural beauty of the comox valley was front and centre this weekend.

Anxiety

A few weeks ago I was trying to think of things that gave me anxiety and I couldn’t come up with many….. I had somehow forgotten my ginormous fear of the ocean.

Anxiety experts agree that the more you avoid your triggers, the bigger they get. By avoiding them you are sending your brain a message that avoidance is the right move, and the source of anxiety is in fact a thing to be feared. Instead subtle desensitization gently coaxes your inner animal out of the crate.

A big earthquake as I arrived on an island right where the 2004 tsunami occurred, suddenly reminded me of what it is that triggers my anxiety.

I considered going home (too expensive), tried to cancel hotels (they wouldn’t let me) and eventually rerouted our travel to stay off the ocean a bit longer.

Regardless I still had to cross the ocean to arrive at our next destination.

Instead of crossing for 4 hours in a crowded and bumpy speedboat (just a few days after a tourist boat in Thailand exploded, and another in Indonesia capsized 🤯🤯🤯) we had a long drive and then did a 1.5hour crossing.

It was choppy, nauseating, crowded and awful. Passengers were puking and big waves soaked everyone. But we survived, and I am grateful for AirPods and my son’s terrible music to distract me.

This served as a positive experience to remind me that the ocean isn’t all that bad. I have one crossing left to get home….

This also gave me an opportunity to empathize with my children who face so many anxieties that I often struggle to understand. For them it might be talking to a stranger, or being late for school…. For me it’s being in or on the ocean…. But the sensations are similar and the way forward is the same.

Small bites of positive experiences.

I’ll go first:

“I feel like an octopus trying to balance half a dozen plates with half finished dishes on them.”

OR

“This week I feel like a robot, I’m going through the motions of life accomplishing lengthy lists of tasks but feel disengaged from those around me. “

Vision boarding, goal setting, visualizing… these are all amazing tools to kick start your inner desire to change.

BUT… a paper I just read made me stop and pause…. spending too much time idolizing about your future self can actually diminish your motivation to change. You get to bask in the glory of being there already (mentally).

Szu-chi & Aaker, researchers out of Stanford University encourage people to spend some time exploring their current state, including negative or unfulfilling experiences to ignite their inner fire to change.

Being aware your current discomfort is an often avoided step in the change process.

If this is something that you struggle with, or brings up issues bigger than you feel capable of handling, please reach out to a mental health professional or your local crisis line. In BC you can text or call 9-8-8.

My Story

Clarity, Confidence and Coordination.

Hi, I am Michelle, I am a movement therapist in Cumberland, BC.

I am a Kinesiologist, a nurse and an Anat Baniel Method of Neuromovement ® practitioner. I work with adults with limiting diagnoses’, children with varying needs, athletes, musicians and have significant experience working with pre and postpartum women. I have a lifelong passion for health and wellness.

I offer a variety of services including pre and postpartum Kinesiology, Hypopressives, small group classes and/or ABM Neuromovement lessons. ABM lessons tap into the learning capacity and plasticity of our brains, improving not only movement patterns but neural pathways.
