To Our Cumberland Community,
We’re reaching out today with heavy hearts and a sincere call for support.
As many of you know, we’re a small town retailer with big-hearts for our people—and it’s times like these when we need each other the most.
On April 1st, our store was the target of an attempted break and enter. Thankfully, the suspect didn’t make it inside, and nothing was taken. A good neighbour whom heard the breaking of glass came out and scared the vigilant away. We chose not to make a public statement then, hoping it was an isolated incident.
We absorbed the cost of the damage of glass and tried to carry on, believing the person had been scared off and it was a one off situation. The police were called and a report was filed.
Unfortunately, in the early hours of Sunday, May 19th, this past Monday at 1:00am our store was broken into. Items were stolen, and the premises were damaged. The front door glass was smashed as well as our display cases.
Security footage shows what appears to be the same individual from the April attempt: over 6 feet tall, wearing a dark blue hoodie.
This is not an isolated issue—there have been whispers that a similar suspect may have broken into the local Waverly liquor store. In a small town like ours, these events affect all of us.
We’re asking for your help.
If you saw or heard anything suspicious around the time of the break-ins—or if you have security cameras in the area—please contact Constable Morneau at the Courtenay RCMP at 250-338-1321.
We also believe it’s time to organize a Block Watch program for our downtown core and surrounding small businesses. If you’re a local business owner, resident, or simply someone who cares about our village’s safety, please reach out to us. Let’s coordinate, share information, and work together to protect what we’ve built.
This is our town, and together, we can keep it safe.
