You may be surprised to learn that fillings don’t last forever. Depending on the type of materials used, fillings can last from 5 to 15 years. During a dental exam, we examine fillings and may take X-rays to help determine when a filling needs to be replaced.

A bridge is a great way to replace one or more missing teeth by literally “bridging the gap” between your remaining teeth.

If you’re experiencing menopause or perimenopause, you might also be noticing changes to your teeth and gums.

Some women report dry mouth, burning sensations in their gum tissue, or an altered taste (often salty, peppery, or sour).

In rarer cases, women experiencing menopause or perimenopause experience something called “menopausal gingivostomatitis,” which changes the colour of their gums and makes them more prone to bleeding. (Most women find that estrogen supplements help with these symptoms.)

Most people bite their cheek occasionally in moments of inattention. That’s nothing to worry about. However, some patients find themselves biting their cheek accidentally a lot more often. This may indicate a more deeply-rooted problem such as a misalignment of teeth, TMD or simply a nervous habit. We can help align teeth, or adjust dentures or bridges, to prevent frequent cheek-biting and improve your bite. Be sure to let us know if this is a concern at your next dental visit.

When a child loses a primary tooth prematurely, it’s important to see us. Primary teeth play an essential role in the alignment of permanent teeth. If a child loses a tooth too early, a permanent tooth may erupt before it’s ready to fill the space. This might cause problems later on if it’s not the right tooth for the space. We can assess the growth and, in some cases, suggest the use of a space maintainer until the adult teeth are ready to erupt.
