What happens after trauma?
1. Traumatic event - something overwhelming, frightening, unsafe, or deeply distressing happens.
2. The brain detects danger and body shifts into survival mode.
3. The body reacts physically and emotionally. The nervous system releases stress hormones like adrenalin and cortisol. This may cause an array of responses: fight, flight, freeze or fawn, intense emotions or even numbness.
4. The experience is stored in your memory. But trauma memories are often stored differently than normal memories. The are often fragmented or sensory-based.
5. The nervous system stays on high alert. The brain wants to prevent future harm so it may stay hyper-vigilant. Even when the danger is gone, the body may react as if it's happening again.
If the trauma isn't processed....
The nervous system stays in survival mode. The brain continues scanning for danger, even when it is safe.
Over time, this shows up in a myriad of ways:
~ chronic anxiety
~ emotional numbness
~ strong reactions to triggers
~ difficulty trusting others
~ people-pleasing to avoid conflict
~ fatigue and burn-out
~ physical symptoms
~ relationship issues
Why healing matters...
Trauma therapy helps the brain and body finish processing what was too overwhelming at the time. ๐งก
