I’m regularly asked about what types of things acupuncturists most commonly treat. Personally, I mostly see folks for muscular-skeletal issues or for pain.
But there’s a wide range of things acupuncture can help with! Here’s a list of things that come up all the time in clinic, some of which you might not expect.
1. Low Back Pain. This is without a doubt one of the most common complaints. It doesn’t mean that anyone is going to needle you in an inflamed area. In fact, some of the most effective spots for treating low back pain are actually along the outer low legs and ankles, or behind the knees.
2. Migraines/Headaches. Acupuncture works really well to reduce the severity and/or frequency of recurrent headaches. If you have a pounding headache when you come in, we likely will not needle locally, instead, we will probably target the feet to drain heat, down-bare and ground.
3. Uterine Health. For starters, menstruation is NOT meant to be painful. Chinese Medicine is a great option for folks experiencing menstrual issues. Whether you’re experiencing amenorrhea (or no period), severe cramping, irregular periods, mid-cycle bleeding, or PMS, acupuncture is a pretty effective tool.
4. Menopausal Symptoms. Chinese medicine provides long-term benefits for hormonal regulation and eases the symptoms of menopause. For instance, it is commonly used to reduce dryness, night-sweats and hot flashes.
5. Smoking and Addiction. The NADA protocol is a really common support for anyone trying to quit smoking, drinking or overcoming addiction of any kind. Ear acupuncture and/or seeds are amazing and super relaxing. Auricular acupuncture is therefore commonly used in the treatment of anxiety.
6. Stress Relief. Many of us suffer from insomnia, irritability, and fatigue. In this case, acupuncture primarily helps the body to regulate by alleviating stagnation. Basically, we are less prone to mental instability and better able to manage our stress when everything is flowing smoothly.
