Shoulder injuries are very common injury in the world of sports (& everday life). Thankfully, research full supports massage therapy as an effective & efficient way to relieve your pain, improve mobility & speed up healing. Anatomically, the shoulder is a ‘floater’. What do we mean by this?
Standing up, most of the joints in our body are stacked with the normal architecture of gravity, except for our shoulders. Our shoulders are the only joint structure from our main skeleton that are supported by a complex weaving of muscle, tendon & ligament. When these muscles are out of balance, they make it easier to create a climate of injury in the area. The reason for our sore & achy shoulders varies but to name a few…
Sports related trauma, car accidents, overuse or repetitive strain & even tardy ergonomics can contribute to shoulders feeling sharp with pain or just a general sense of tension in the area. How can massage help? One study (Liza et al., 2023) determined that massage can work by releasing nerve tension and improving localized blood flow. When your massage is therapeutic, measured & there is meaningful communication between the patient & therapist better healing can occur. This study profiles sensation based language to ensure that the therapists pressure applied feels effective for the patient. What might that language sound like?
How does that feel? How’s my pressure? Does this feel therapeutic? Is this valuable? Do you want less pressure or more? Tell me when it starts to feel productive? How are you doing? Can you rate the pressure out of 10? Does the technique I’m using now feel like it’s helping? Your massage therapist should be prompting for your feedback throughout your treatment. So much of a good treatment comes down to communication (& I’m not talking about sharing the latest Netflix series you happen to be binge watching). Think of the massage treatment as an experience you co-create with your RMT. When we practice saying literally what we feel in an objective manner, it helps propel the healing journey so that good things can happen to our mind, spirit & sore spots too.

Doing any version of this, this weekend? We are in the prime of our fall colours season & so fortunate to have nature bless us with the forests' coloration & its' fresh, dewy smells. We hope your getting out on the trails, if even one of our parks here in the city of
Hiking on uneven ground can be very stimulating for the stabalizers of the lower body (even if your not wearing a 30lbs pack like Jamie Lynn in this 1st photo). For longer hikes on technical trails (where you may have to look where your feet go more often), consider warming up, stretching & of course ‘tis the season to dress in layers as well as supportive, non compressive hiking boots.
Being out in nature is soothing to our nervous system & a wonderful way to down regulate, clear your head & get some nutritive activity. This weekend, let’s all get outside to meander, unwind, clear our heads & bathe in that beautiful Autumnal sunshine.

🌿 **Finding Balance, Naturally** 🌿

The ‘nature’ of balance can be elusive to hold while thriving in our busy world. I’m not even sure it exists for long at any given time in mine, but I can capture its essence best in the outdoors. Any element of the earth can offer itself for inspiration. Take trees for example…their roots represent our responsibilities, grounding us, while its branches reach for growth and relaxation. 🌳 Without strong roots, the branches can’t flourish—but without the freedom to grow, even the sturdiest tree becomes stagnant.

At SoreSpots Massage Therapy, we believe in nurturing both. Whether you’re rooted in the grind or reaching for your next goal, a little self-care keeps you balanced and strong. 🌸✨

Is it too hot outside to talk about hot stones? 😂
Many of our therapists use cold stones too as a way to help with spot-specific inflammation and swelling. Using natural elements like stones is referenced in many cultures. For example, as part of Ayurvedic medicine in India, healers collected stones from river beds to warm them in water.
In some Indigenous North American cultures, the method of heliotherapy (sun therapy) was used, which involved placing stones in the sun’s rays and then onto the body to relieve pain. For example, a stone may have been placed on a woman’s abdomen to ease cramping felt during menstruation. In addition, using stones in sweat lodges is a tradition that continues today. In Hawaii’s tradition, healers called kahunas practice a type of massage called lomilomi, which incorporates placing hot stones on the body to increase blood flow. Just a little chunk of massage history ☺️

How hot are hot stones? The stones that our RMT's use are at a controlled temperature (at or below 125 degrees fahrenheit/51 degrees celcius). We also never use stones that are too hot to hold in our hands.
That being said, we would never place a stone on a client that we, as therapists’ could not handle directly. However, we also understand that heat feels different to everyone and may also be interpreted in different ways by different parts of the body. We check in frequently to ensure your comfort and would also ask you to let us know if the stones being used feel too cool.
During a treatment, you may experience the stones as an extension of the therapists hands for deeper release into the muscle and connective tissue. The therapist may also choose to place hot stones in areas of increased tension - which can help improve localized circulation.
