🌟 Staff Spotlight: Brian Sampson 🌟

Meet Brian, our Special Projects Manager at RelyOn Canada. Brian originally joined the team in 2014 as an IT Systems Administrator, but it didn’t take long for him to expand his role far beyond the server room. Once the tech environment was stabilized, he jumped at the chance to get involved in operations; supporting STST (Survival Training Simulation Theatre) training, working as an FRC deckhand and coxswain, and stepping into role-player scenarios for emergency response training. He later served as Centre Manager, and now focuses on procurement, special projects, and one of his main passions: leading the CCMME (Command & Control and Management of Major Emergencies) program.

Though his background is in IT — having spent over eight years at BlackBerry — Brian fully embraced the safety and survival world when he came onboard. What started as a complete career shift turned out to be the ideal fit, giving him the unique chance to blend technical, operational, and instructional work. He’s earned multiple certifications from Transport Canada and has supported major training efforts, including delivering CCMME and PICA training aboard the West Aquarius.

Brian is particularly proud of his work with the CCMME course, which helps offshore personnel develop the skills needed to manage major emergencies with confidence and control. Seeing participants return to the program and share how they’ve applied the training into action at their own facilities is a rewarding part of his work. Outside of RelyOn, Brian’s career has had some surprising highlights, he once accepted an award on stage in New York City, lived in Texas while launching a support centre, and is a proud cribbage champion. We’re lucky to have his drive and multi-talented mindset pushing RelyOn’s projects forward!

🌟 Staff Spotlight: Edward Fudge 🌟

Meet Ed, our General Manager at RelyOn Canada. With a career rooted in fire services and safety, Ed now oversees the day-to-day operations of both our Nova Scotia and Newfoundland facilities. His focus is on maintaining high standards of safety, efficiency, and operational excellence – but he’s far from behind a desk full-time. Ed continues to stay hands-on in the field, providing rescue services, firefighting instruction, and stepping into offshore safety officer roles whenever needed.

Ed began his career in 1990 with the Canadian Air Reserves as a firefighter, later transitioning to the regular force in 1997. He served at home and abroad, including deployments in Lahr, Germany, HMCS St. John’s, 12 Wing Shearwater, and 14 Wing Greenwood. During his military service, he also taught technical rescue and firefighting at industrial sites throughout the Maritimes. Leaving the military fire service in 2002 was a tough decision, but it opened the door to a fulfilling second career in safety and training. In 2012, Edward became part of the founding team behind what would become RelyOn Canada, helping shape the company through roles like Quality Manager, VP of New Business Ventures, and now General Manager. He’s also served as a Safety Lead for major offshore projects, including ExxonMobil’s Sable decommissioning and work on the Hibernia platform.

With credentials including NFPA Level II Firefighter, Aircraft Firefighting, and OPITO Assessor and Verifier, Ed brings deep technical expertise to the job. His work has taken him around the world – training in Japan, Egypt, Scotland, Norway, and Guyana – but he’s most proud of helping build RelyOn Canada from the ground up. Now focused on growing our Industrial Services division and strengthening operations in both provinces, Ed continues to lead by example. We’re proud to have his drive and vision guiding the way forward!

🌟 Staff Spotlight: Shana Handspiker 🌟

Introducing Shana, our HSEQ/Rescue Standby Coordinator at RelyOn Canada. Since joining the company in 2015 after graduating with honours in Occupational Health & Safety from NSCC, Shana has taken on a wide range of roles, from instructor to operations leader to safety officer, always with the goal of making work environments safer and more effective. In her current role, she oversees health, safety, and quality programs, delivers industrial safety training, and is now stepping into Rescue Standby Coordination – a transition she’s excited to take on.

Over the years, Shana has worked both onshore and offshore in demanding environments, including safety roles on construction sites, onboard the SSCV Thialf, Noble Regina Allen, and Thebaud platform, as well as instructing aboard vessels like the Stena Drillmax and Van Oord Stornes.  One of her proudest accomplishments remains her time in Newfoundland, where she ran operations and served as Centre Manager – a leadership chapter she looks back on with pride.

Whether she’s conducting a safety audit, developing a new training module, or mentoring the next generation of safety professionals, Shana brings insight, drive, and a deep belief in continuous improvement. Her passion for fostering safer work environments and building a culture where safety truly matters is felt across every project she touches. We’re proud to have her on our team!

🌟 Staff Spotlight: Chris Hedges 🌟

Meet Chris, our Offshore Instructor at our Mount Pearl facility in Newfoundland. Chris currently delivers Basic Safety Training (BST) and BST-R courses while progressing toward certification as an OPITO instructor. His journey into safety and rescue began on the lakes of Ontario, where he developed a deep love for the outdoors through boating and snorkelling.

In 1999, he moved to British Columbia and began diving the following year. Since then, he has worked as a Dive Master specializing in shark encounters in Thailand, the Bahamas, and the Cayman Islands. During the winters, he served as an Avalanche Rescue Technician and Medic with Whistler Blackcomb Ski Patrol, an experience that deeply shaped his commitment to emergency response. His career has included roles as a Rescue Swimmer with Cougar Helicopters, a Marine Search and Rescue Technician with the Canadian Coast Guard, Rescue/Recovery Diver, and Remote Project Paramedic. These roles have not only been rewarding but have also fuelled his passion for helping others stay safe and succeed in high-risk environments.

In 2022, Chris and his family made the move to Newfoundland. He is a proud dad of two adventurous boys and a lucky husband to an incredible wife. Outside of work, he challenges himself through triathlons, swimming, biking, running, and pushing his limits. He turns 50 this year, see you on the pickleball court, the force is strong. We’re incredibly lucky to have Chris on our team!
