Pharmacy Association of Nova Scotia

Pharmacy Association of Nova Scotia PANS is the advocacy body for over 1,500 pharmacy professionals in Nova Scotia.

PANS OBJECTIVES

* to advance the academic, scientific, professional and commercial aspects of pharmacy and its practitioners in Nova Scotia;
* to encourage and promote improvement in public health in Nova Scotia;
* to co-operate with any pharmaceutical, scientific, medical, dental and trade associations who have similar objectives to those of this association;
* to promote liaison among the various branches of pharmacy;
* to collect, develop and disseminate information to assist members in successful pharmacy management;
* to obtain and/or provide and/or administer member benefits;
* to be the official spokesman for its members; and
* to act as a centre of employment information for members seeking employment in Nova Scotia.

✨ SPEAKER SPOTLIGHT ✨Sarah Larose graduated from the Dalhousie University College of Pharmacy and has over a decade of experience working in community pharmacy practice settings. Throughout her career she has acted as an author, presenter and expert reviewer for continuing education programs with Dal CPE, PANS and CPhA. Sarah is currently a full-time Instructor at the Dalhousie College of Pharmacy. Her responsibilities include course development, coordination and instruction across all years of the PharmD program on a variety of therapeutic topics.

Sarah's Sunday session, "New Frontiers and Approaches in Skeletal Health," offers an interactive, case-based review of Canada’s updated osteoporosis and fracture prevention guidelines. Attendees will work through real scenarios to refine decision-making, strengthen patient collaboration, and enhance teamwork with the broader healthcare system. This session was co-developed by Marie Rocci.

✨ SPEAKER SPOTLIGHT ✨Coleman Black received his undergraduate degree in Biochemistry and Genetics from Memorial University, medical degree from Dalhousie University, completed his Internal Medicine Residency training in Saint John NB, and fellowship training in both Adult Respirology and Adult Sleep Medicine at the University of Ottawa. He currently practices Respirology and Critical Care at Miramichi Regional Hospital and works as a Sleep Specialist at the Atlantic Sleep Centre at the Saint John Regional Hospital.

Coleman's Saturday Platinum Symposium, "The Latest Evidence and Advancements in COPD Management", will review the latest evidence and advancements in COPD management, by reviewing burden of disease and the IMPACT Landmark Study, the advantages of SITT and the guidelines/recommendations for triple therapy.

Today, September 10, Nova Scotians aged 75 and older can book their free RSV vaccine through pharmacies and public health, with the first appointments Monday, September 15. Book your appointment online at http://novascotia.ca/vaccination or by calling 1-833-797-7772.

Infants under eight months and adults 75 years and older will soon have access to free protection against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

Today, September 10, Nova Scotians aged 75 and older can book their free RSV vaccine through pharmacies and public health, with the first appointments Monday, September 15. Primary care providers will begin offering the vaccine in November.

The program for infants under eight months will be offered every year during the RSV season, which typically begins in late fall and lasts until spring. Newborns will be offered their dose before being discharged from hospital, and other eligible infants can receive their dose from their primary care provider or public health. This year, the program runs from October 15 to April 30.

RSV is a common respiratory virus that can lead to severe complications such as bronchiolitis and pneumonia, particularly in infants and older adults.

Sabrina's tech focused session, "The Daily Grind: Non-Sterile Compounding Without Losing Your Pestle”, will review current regulatory standards and best practices for non-sterile compounding in Nova Scotia community pharmacies. ✨ SPEAKER SPOTLIGHT ✨ Dr. Scott Lee completed his biochemistry degree at Mount Allison University, a master’s in clinical epidemiology at Memorial University, and medical training through Dalhousie. Now practicing hepatology in Kentville, he is developing a multidisciplinary chronic liver disease clinic while enjoying life with his family in the Annapolis Valley.

Scott's session, "Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease Updates", will outline the reasons for the change in nomenclature from NAFLD to MASLD. MASLD will be reviewed by examing the epidemiology, screening, risk stratification, current and future treatment options.
