SOMATIC Yoga 🧘🏽‍♀️
The practice of somatic yoga teaches us new ways to move with ease helping the brain to rewire.
Through pendiculation, the brain has the ability to reset muscle tension and tone, sending a signal of safety through the entire body.

Our core muscles have the potential to be very strong, and the spine to be extremely flexiblle so to work well together we need to create a dance between the two!

To find this dance, you need to develop balanced control of your core muscles first and then you can build the strength.

Join me in classes and we will “core dance” on it together.

A quick “flash” of a Somatic Yin class tomorrow at 6::00pm.

Somatic uses gentle pendiculative movements and breathwork to open the connection channels between our mind and body. In a nutshell this will aid in our healing of chronic pain and managing stress, with its gentle, slow, intentional movements paired with a gentle holding of poses (Yin) to release all that needs to be release.

It’s that time of year… the Monkey Walk!

With ice and treacherous walkways our chances of slipping and falling dramatically increase.

Did you know that in Canada, over 9,000 people have been hospitalized in a single winter from falling on ice with injuries ranging from mild to severe - from muscle sprains to brain injuries.

Well this is where the Monkey Walk enters and I will be teaching it again in classes this week to help us to walk more safely on slippery surfaces. We rarely fall from a standing position, so we will also be practising balance poses with movement!

So come join in the fun in classes this week and normaize Monkey Walking in Dartmouth!

Beautiful words to ponder for the New Year!

Happy New Year and Love and Peace to all.

As We Shine Our Light, May We Light the Way for Others

As we celebrate the new year,
may we discover within ourselves
a deep and lasting sense of peace, love, and belonging.

May we learn to pause,
to listen inwardly,
and to meet both joy and uncertainty
with gentleness.

In opening our hearts and minds,
may compassion soften our judgments,
and curiosity take the place of fear.

May this inner openness ripple outward,
shaping the way we speak,
the way we listen,
the way we care for one another.

In the simple, often unseen moments,
may we choose kindness,
patience,
and understanding.

As we shine our light,
may we light the way for others.
May our lives become a shining presence,
steady, sincere, and alive,
offering a living celebration
of peace and love
to all we encounter
in the year ahead.

PROPRIOCEPTION by Meghan Macarthy:
One of the biggest fears as we age (for a good reason) is falling. Increasing proprioception decreases your injury risk by 45% in one study; FYI the same study notes that stretching only decreases injury risk by 4%. In the real world, if we are going to lose our balance, it is typically not while we are standing still and focused (as in tree pose). That is just the way it is with the patch of ice, hole in the lawn, or the dog toy I just tripped over in the dark.

Proprioception relies on receptors which are in muscles, tendons, and the skin and the inner ear. Others are within the connective tissues (ligaments and capsules) of joints.

We can improve and retrain our proprioceptivity by cognitively moving in unfamiliar ways like in Somatic Yoga. Increasing proprioception expands the safety net for the the physical body to stay upright.

Now put on some dance music and have fun!
