Commemorating Emancipation Day - The first day of August is known as Emancipation Day around the world. It is the anniversary of British parliament’s decision to abolish slavery across its empire in 1834. It resulted in freedom for about 800,000 enslaved people of African descent throughout the British colonies.

Approximately 10,000 people of African descent came to Nova Scotia. They were Black Loyalists, refugees from the War of 1812, indentured servants and Trelawny Maroons (https://parks.canada.ca/lhn-nhs/ns/halifax/culture/histoire-history/marrons-maroons) - enslaved African descendants brought to Nova Scotia against their will who participated in the building of Citadel Hill and worked to establish the Preston area. (https://bccns.com/our-history/the-maroons/ #:~:text=The%20Maroons%20Depart,Preston%20Area%20of%20Halifax%20County.)

Once the Slavery Abolition Act took effect, Canada became a free territory for enslaved people of African descent escaping from America. There are currently 52 historical African Nova Scotian communities in Nova Scotia.

Globally, 1 August honours emancipation and acknowledges the tragedies of the transatlantic slave trade in which millions of African descended people were enslaved or lost their lives.

The health impact of racism - Due to anti-Black racism, social and economic factors, people of African descent are at a higher risk for getting sick and are disproportionately affected by severe illness and hospitalization.

Black men in Nova Scotia face higher rates of chronic illnesses like diabetes, high blood pressure, and prostate cancer. They also face barriers to care that can lead to delayed diagnoses and worse outcomes. Black women face similar barriers and face higher rates of heart disease and diabetes, among other chronic health issues.

The Nova Scotia Brotherhood is working to change that by providing culturally aware care, health education, and one-on-one support in Dartmouth, Halifax, Hammonds Plains, North Preston, East Preston, and Truro.

The Nova Scotia Sisterhood is doing the same, by working to provide Black women in the Central Zone to access culturally competent healthcare in the community and to improve overall health and wellbeing.

Contact Nova Scotia Brotherhood or Sisterhood to learn more or to make an appointment with a member of their teams about a variety of health concerns:

How Can I Recognize Emancipation Day?

- Attend an event taking place throughout the province with your friends and family.
- Talk about the history and current issues that affect African Nova Scotians and how we can work together to address systemic anti-Black racism.
- Have courageous conversations about race and racism and the true meaning of reparations.
- Pay homage to the souls lost in the Atlantic Ocean during the middle passage by placing a flower in the ocean.
- Share this poster:https://ansa.novascotia.ca/sites/default/files/inline/documents/emancipation_day_poster_english.pdf
