Today is a day to celebrate all of the amazing care and support that Indigenous nurses provide to Canadians every day. Thank you for your role in advancing healthcare for all.

On April 10, we celebrate Indigenous Nurses Day in honour of Edith Monture, a Kanien’kehà:ka woman who was the first Indigenous registered nurse in Canada and to gain the right to vote in a Canadian federal election.

Today is a reminder to always honour the crucial contributions of First Nations, Métis and Inuit nurses in advancing health care.

As nurses, we understand the importance of working together to dismantle harmful colonial legacies and improve Indigenous-specific cultural safety in health care.

We stand with Indigenous patients and nurses today and every day.

When time is limited, closeness matters most.

But in too many hospital rooms, there simply isn’t space for it.

No space to lie beside someone you love.
No space to hold them the way you want to.
No space for those final, quiet moments together.

Cuddle beds change that.

They make room for connection, comfort, and being together — right until the end.

Right now, you can help fund cuddle beds for Dartmouth General’s palliative care unit.

And thanks to the generosity of the Bragg Family, your gift will be matched.

Give today.
Give closeness.
Give presence when it matters most.

DGH is proud to celebrate the important work Public Health does to keep our communities healthy and thriving. Thanks for all that you do!

Celebrating Canadian Public Health Week

April 6-10 marks Canadian Public Health Week. During this week, we celebrate the important work Public Health does to keep our communities healthy and thriving.

Public Health supports us in three important ways:

Promoting health and wellness.
Protecting against environmental and health hazards.
Preventing and reducing the impact of illness.

Much of this work happens quietly, often in ways you might not notice What matters is that it’s always there.

Here are just a few ways Public Health shows up:

•Supporting people during pregnancy and after babies are born
•Making free routine and seasonal vaccines accessible in our communities
•Managing serious infectious diseases to prevent their spread
•Partnering with municipalities to build healthier communities – like safer active transportation, community water fluoridation, and better access to healthy food
•Offering school-based programs and services, including Youth Health Centre supports, vaccinations and fluoride varnish programming

…and so much more.

Even when you don’t see it, Public Health is working all around you to create .

Thank you to the dedicated Public Health practitioners who make this work possible. Your impact reaches every corner of our communities.

Congratulations to Dartmouth General Hospital radiologist and Foundation board member Dr. Carla Pittman for receiving a prestigious honour from Mount Allison University. The Grace Annie Lockhart Pin was created, as the university states, to recognize women “whose lives and work demonstrate impact, service, innovation, and leadership – as trailblazers in their fields, community builders, advocates, mentors and changemakers.”

“I feel very privileged to be in the company of all these great people,” says Dr. Pittman. “It means a lot. Mount A was really important to me.”

Carla Pittman grew up in Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland and set off to Mount Allison at the age of 17.

“It was my first time away from home, coming from smalltown Newfoundland,” says Dr. Pittman. “It was a great small school, very personalized and you knew your professors.”

Dr. Pittman always thought medicine could be in her future.

“I went to Mount A with the idea I was going to be a doctor but I had no idea what that really meant,” says Dr. Pittman. “Initially I thought I might go into research, and I actually got a research grant when I graduated. The university exposed me to other things I could do.”

She graduated with a BSc Honours in Psychology and Biology in 1991, before earning her medical degree at Memorial University of Newfoundland and completing her radiology residency and a Master’s in Clinical Epidemiology.

Dr. Pittman joined Dartmouth General Hospital as a clinical radiologist in 2000, and has held leadership roles at the hospital, including President of the Medical Staff Association. and Chief of Diagnostic Imaging. Dr. Pittman has also had a major impact at the hospital through her work with the Foundation, where she co-chaired the Above and Beyond Campaign helping to raise more than $13.7 million to expand surgical capacity and modernize diagnostic imaging facilities. Her leadership of the physicians’ giving campaign achieved 100 percent participation.

“Dartmouth General is very close to my heart and it parallels Mount Allison,” says Dr. Pittman. “We have this culture, where everybody knows everybody and we all support each other. It was like that at Mount A and that’s what I enjoy about Dartmouth General is that culture of support and innovation and being able to do things quickly because people work together really well. I’m passionate about Dartmouth General.”

The Grace Annie Lockhart Sesquicentennial Pin at Mount Allison is named after the first woman in the British Empire to earn a university degree, in 1875. Recipients and their families will gather together for a ceremony in Sackville, New Brunswick on May 10th. The Mount Allison tradition continues in Dr. Pittman’s family. She will be joined at that event by her daughter, who graduated from the university last year, and her son, who is in his second year.

Congratulations Dr. Carla Pittman on this much deserved honour from all of us at the Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation!

Meet Daniel Reyly, one of the Physician Assistants (PAs) working at the DGH Emergency Department.

“If you come into the Emergency Department, you may get seen that day by one of the physician assistants. My process begins with a comprehensive review of a patient’s history and a physical exam. Working closely with my supervising physician, I help determine a diagnosis and a path forward. I am responsible for ordering diagnostic tests and medications, performing necessary bedside procedures, and coordinating with specialty consultants. I place a high priority on patient education and counseling throughout the treatment process.”
