Nova Scotians will soon receive specialized care through a new menopause clinic, the initial phase of what will be Canada’s first Menopause Centre of Excellence.

The new specialized clinic will be dedicated to managing symptoms related to perimenopause, menopause and post-menopause.

Centres of excellence are built on three pillars: clinical care, research and education. Research and education components will be added over time.

A request for proposals has been issued for clinic space, expected to open in winter 2026-2027. It is available at: https://procurement-portal.novascotia.ca/

The clinic will be staffed by a range of providers, including a general practitioner, registered nurse, pelvic floor physiotherapist, dietitian and gynecologist. They will deliver in-person and virtual care provincewide.

The Menopause Centre of Excellence is led by the Department of Health and Wellness in partnership with the Menopause Society of Nova Scotia, IWK Health and Nova Scotia Health.

We’re honoured to see Dalhousie Medical School’s Indigenous Admissions Pathway, Keknu’tmasiek Ta’n Tel Welo’ltimk (We are Learning to be Well), highlighted in this CBC interview featuring medical student Bonnie Cremo from Eskasoni First Nation.

This pathway recognizes the real and longstanding barriers Indigenous learners face on the journey to medical school and works to remove them through Indigenous guidance, community leadership, and culturally grounded admissions processes.

This story is a powerful reminder of why Indigenous pathways into medicine matter and the impact of supporting Indigenous learners in shaping the future of Indigenous health.

Facebook isn’t allowing us to share the link directly, but you can find the story by searching: “Dal's pathway program helping Mi'kmaw woman realize dream.”

Resident Doctor Awareness Week - meet Dr. Liam Redden

"I was born in Halifax and grew up in Tantallon, NS. I finished my undergraduate degree at Saint Mary’s University followed by medical school at Dalhousie. I’m thrilled to be doing my family medicine residency on the South Shore, mostly in Liverpool. I’m very happy to train in more rural settings where I really get to feel like a part of the community. Nova Scotia is and always will be home and I’m excited to be able to give back to the place that raised me.

Outside of medicine, I love to get out into the woods bird-hunting with my german shorthaired pointer. I also enjoy fishing, golf, off-roading, enjoying the beautiful South Shore beaches and spending time with my 10 month old baby boy."

If you see Liam in the hospital, a clinic or in the community, please extend a warm South Shore welcome!
