For many Black students, the journey to medical school is marked by ambition, resilience, and sometimes, isolation.

The launch of a new bursary, created through a transformative new partnership with the Foundation for Black Communities, is helping to change that. It offers not only financial support, but also a sense of belonging. Learn more about this significant step toward educational equity at: https://ow.ly/G1P250XStnV

Respiratory illness season has landed in Nova Scotia. We’re seeing an increase of influenza, COVID-19 and RSV in the province. Here are a few tips to help you get through it:

• If possible, stay home when you feel unwell, especially if you have a fever, new cough or trouble breathing.
• Keep your flu, RSV and COVID-19 vaccines up to date if you are eligible.
• Wash your hands regularly with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
• Cover coughs and sneezes with your sleeve or a tissue, and throw tissues away after use.
• Improve airflow by opening windows when possible or using exhaust fans to bring in fresh air.
• Consider wearing a mask in crowded indoor spaces or when visiting people at higher risk (seniors, infants and those with other illnesses).
• Clean high-touch surfaces such as doorknobs, stair railings and shared devices (remote controls, computers, phones) with a cleaner/disinfectant.
• Seek medical care or call 811 if you have trouble breathing, chest pain, confusion, or worsening symptoms.

For many people, spending time with family members over the holidays can be hard work. Different viewpoints and simmering dynamics can pile up quickly, making tempers flare. Instead of waiting for things to escalate, Halifax family physician Dr. Muna Chowdhury says giving a well-timed redirection to steer things back toward calmer waters.

“This could be as simple as asking about holiday plans, steering the topic toward a lighter subject or suggesting a new activity. These small shifts help people save face and avoid feeling like they’ve been shut down.”

Read her blog post below for more advice on how to keep the peace during family gatherings ⬇

As the earth rests beneath a blanket of snow, it reminds us to take this time to recuperate.

Tonight is the longest night of the year. Traditionally the Winter Solstice is a time to reflect on the past, to tell stories, and to renew ourselves for the year ahead.

Tomorrow, after its extended rest, the sun will return, and the days will gradually grow long again. But tonight, we will be following the sun’s lead and using this time to recharge.

We thank Elders Florence and Philip Paynter and Elder Bone for sharing their wisdom and guiding us through ceremony earlier this month.
