Portland Hills-Kripalu Yoga & Aromatherapy

Portland Hills-Kripalu Yoga & Aromatherapy Hello all! My name is Helen Davis-Mullin. I have been teaching Yoga for over 18 years now. I also study/take various courses, to keep my knowledge fresh.

Teaching Kripalu Yoga in Dartmouth Yoga Studios, ON-LINE Yoga & IN-HOME Yoga Studio & at your work place - SMALL CLASS SIZES
*Aromatherpy consultation/blends offered by appt. I am a certified Kripalu Yoga Teacher (Atlantic Yoga Teacher Training). ( Kripalu in Massachusetts http://kripalu.org and locally). I taught yoga at the Dartmouth YMCA for 9 years until it closed its' doors in June 2015. In August 2015, I decided (with the support of my family) to open a home-based studio. I taught in our home on Alpine Drive for one year, and then we decided to "downsize" in July 2016. I now have an "in-home" yoga space to teach in our home on Bellbrook Cres. Over the years, I have also taught yoga in various schools, private classes, in different workplaces and yoga studios (Sunrise Yoga Studio, Dartmouth Yoga Studio)
I currently teach out of home, on Bellbrook Cres in Portland Hills, Dartmouth, or at your place or business or in your home. I love teaching yoga, and continue to do so - so that everyBODY, no matter what age or size or ability, will feel comfortable coming to a class. My in-home classes are small in size - between 2 to 5 persons each class. At your work-pace or various studios, I teach up to 15 persons per class. I also teach YOGA IN THE POOL, which run each week in the summer, weather permitting. This is a VERY gentle class. Wear your bathing suites, bring a towel or two, and come 10-15 mins early, to get used to the pool temperature. This class is short, but if the sun is strong, please wear a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and bring some water. The classes are geared to women, but I can also teach classes outside of my home at your workplace, that can accommodate both men and women. I am 59 years old. I am a mom with 4 older "kids" and a wife to a loving husband. We also have a little non-shedding dog that is also a big part of our family. At my in-home space, if you are without a yoga mat, I have these, (as well as blocks, blankets, yoga straps, & various other props - should you like) to help you take a class. Kripalu Yoga, is a style of Hatha Yoga, (physical yoga). There are 4 components to each class; a short centering - 2 mins or so long (basically breathing & calming the body & getting the head in a place that is not at your outside work, grocery lists, kids etc etc), followed by warm ups for the postures/poses (asana's) we will be doing in that particular class that day/eve. then the Postures/Poses/Asana's & finally Shavasana - relaxation for 10 minutes and sometimes more. Within all of the components mentioned is the ever important "Breath Work" Breathing (Pranayama). If you listen to your breath, you will be right there - in the Present moment. If you have never done yoga before, then the Beginner Class is for you. It is an important step to take, as you will learn how to go into a posture & come out safely for your body. You will be given a Health Form to fill out. It is very important that a Yoga teacher knows of any limitations an individual may have. This can be as simple as a previous break in a bone to high blood pressure, to more serious issues such as heart disease etc. all is kept confidential. Most of us have "something" going on in terms of health/wellness. Postures are modified for various things such as high blood pressure, spinal issues etc. You will also learn to modify the postures you do, depending on where you body is, during not only that day, but in that moment. So, you can make your class more gentle or more moderate. If you have "yoga experience", and would like to join a session already underway, please send me an email at pathwasy@eastlink.ca or private message me here. Casual & friendly, the classes are of various ages and sizes. Here, & what should be found in any yoga class, you have nothing to compete with, or against, not even with yourself. If you start from where you are, you will find you may end up in a place you didn't expect. The journey is one breath at a time. Feel free to message me if you have any questions :) Helen

HI all, Gentle Women's Pool Yoga is full for July 24th. If the weather does NOT co-operate, then the same individuals are signed up for July 31.
I will only be taking names for the next pool yoga class on July 29th. This is due to a larger number that are interested and if cancellation occur. This is a way to keep it fair for those who want to attend.
As per usual, the suggested donation is $10.00 to go towards Margaret's House.
Thanks everyone.

Well hello to all my people out there. It's been a while since I posted! Just wanted to give a heads up to those that have in-boxed or emailed me about teaching. I am currently under Dr's treatment and having another surgery in a few months for thyroid cancer (good results so far) and I have been out of commission because of a compression fracture (my back). Not to worry though, I am tougher than I seem and just a little stubborn about getting better 😁😂
I would like to offer up GENTLE YOGA IN THE POOL FOR WOMEN (it is 4 feet deep, with water height of about 3.75 feet and heated to about 86-90F). The classes run for 1/2 (ish) an hour. I am giving donations to Margarets House, (Feeding others of Dartmouth), that is my only "suggestion" for payment- $10 per person.
Wednesdays at 1:30pm - weather permitting. I can fit up to 6 persons in the pool at once.
First ask, gets the spots. I will be doing this until Aug 7th.

Happy Days

A longer, read, but a nice read.....
My brain and
heart divorced
a decade ago
over who was
to blame about
how big of a mess
I have become
eventually,
they couldn't be
in the same room
with each other
now my head and heart
share custody of me
I stay with my brain
during the week
and my heart
gets me on weekends
they never speak to one another
- instead, they give me
- the same note to pass
- to each other every week
and their notes they
send to one another always
says the same thing:
"This is all your fault"
on Sundays
my heart complains
about how my
head has let me down
in the past
and on Wednesday
my head lists all
of the times my
heart has screwed
things up for me
in the future
they blame each
other for the
state of my life
there's been a lot
of yelling - and crying
so,
lately, I've been
spending a lot of
time with my gut
who serves as my
unofficial therapist
most nights, I sneak out of the
window in my ribcage
and slide down my spine
and collapse on my
gut's plush leather chair
that's always open for me
~ and I just sit sit sit sit
until the sun comes up
last evening,
my gut asked me
if I was having a hard
time being caught
between my heart
and my head
I nodded
I said I didn't know
if I could live with
either of them anymore
"my heart is always sad about
something that happened yesterday
while my head is always worried
about something that may happen tomorrow,"
I lamented
my gut squeezed my hand
"I just can't live with
my mistakes of the past
or my anxiety about the future,"
I sighed
my gut smiled and said:
"in that case,
you should
go stay with your
lungs for a while,"
I was confused
- the look on my face gave it away
"if you are exhausted about
your heart's obsession with
the fixed past and your mind's focus
on the uncertain future
your lungs are the perfect place for you
there is no yesterday in your lungs
there is no tomorrow there either
there is only now
there is only inhale
there is only exhale
there is only this moment
there is only breath
and in that breath
you can rest while your
heart and head work
their relationship out."
this morning,
while my brain
was busy reading
tea leaves
and while my
heart was staring
at old photographs
I packed a little
bag and walked
to the door of
my lungs
before I could even knock
she opened the door
with a smile and as
a gust of air embraced me
she said
"what took you so long?"

My Story

Hello all! My name is Helen Davis-Mullin. I have been teaching Yoga for over 14 years now. I am a certified Kripalu Yoga Teacher (Atlantic Yoga Teacher Training). I also study/take various courses each year, to keep my knowledge fresh. ( Kripalu in Massachusetts http://kripalu.org and locally). I am also taken separate Anatomy & Physiology classes, and “Yoga as Medicine” (Yoga Therapy) with Dr. Timothy McCall M.D. to understand the dynamics of movement of our bodies. I have a background in animal nursing, and have managed a physio-therapy clinic in my past. I taught yoga at the Dartmouth YMCA for 9 years until it closed in June 2015. In August 2015, I decided (with the support of my family) to open a home-based studio. I taught in our home on Alpine Drive for 1 year, & then we decided to downsize in July 2016 to another home in Portland Hills when our 4 children “left the nest” :) Over the years, I have also taught yoga in various schools, in different workplaces other yoga studios, both in groups and private classes

I currently teach out of our home on Bellbrook Cres. in Portland Hills (Portland Hills Yoga (also known as Pathways Yoga) & at Sunrise Yoga Studio - both in Dartmouth. I also teach at various work-places - contractually - in the Dartmouth/Halifax area. I love teaching yoga, and continue to do so - so that everyBODY, no matter what age or size or ability, will feel comfortable coming to a class. No one should ever feel that their body cannot come into a yoga class.

I am 55 years old. I am a mom to 4 older kids, and a wife to a loving husband. We also have a non-shedding doggy that normally is not home - when I teach from home - as our fur baby loves to join classes just a little too much for most! If you are without a yoga mat, I have these, (as well as blocks, blankets, yoga straps, & various other props - should you like) to help you take a class at my home.

At the yoga studio’s I teach at, you will need a mat. If you just want to “try on” a yoga class, a mat can be supplied for you. If I am teaching at your work-place, you will need a yoga mat, & comfy clothing.
