The Need for Connection:
Gathering BY THE FIRE

Saturday September 6th 9-12

As human beings—and indeed, as mammals—we thrive on contact. Our need for connection is fundamental; it encompasses meaningful conversations, a sense of belonging, and the warmth of touch. We are wired to seek out the expressions on other people's faces, to feel the nuances of their energy, and to create bonds that nourish our souls. Everything around us carries energy—an old table tells stories, nature hums with life, and both humans and animals contribute to the rich tapestry of our existence.

Sitting by the fire provides a unique opportunity to reconnect with one another. In this warm, inviting setting, we gather to share stories, laughter, and silence. The fire symbolizes more than just warmth; it is a beacon drawing us together, creating a space where we can immerse ourselves in each other's energy while also focusing inward.

By the fire is also a place and time for journaling and participating in different styles of meditation. With the crackling sound of the fire and the soft glow illuminating our thoughts, journaling becomes a reflective practice. We can jot down our feelings, ponder our dreams, and document our personal journeys. The ambience encourages creativity, allowing our ideas to flow freely onto the pages.

Furthermore, the fire's calming presence is an excellent backdrop for various meditation techniques. Whether practicing mindfulness, guided visualization, or mantra repetition, the act of meditating "by the fire" fosters deeper introspection and relaxation. We can close our eyes and focus on our breath, letting the warmth and light envelop us, creating a cocoon of tranquility.

Connecting with others around the fire ignites a shared energy that can be incredibly healing. These moments allow us to feel what others feel: joy, sorrow, hope, and understanding. As we listen to each other's stories and witness each other's expressions, we reinforce our sense of belonging. In these genuine exchanges, we acknowledge and honor our shared humanity.

In this way, sitting by the fire becomes a ritual—a method to unwind, reconnect, and recharge. It’s a reminder of the importance of togetherness and the power of shared energy. Through these moments, we learn not only about one another but also about ourselves. We discover strength, resilience, and compassion, ultimately realizing that we are all part of something greater.

In a world where individualism often dominates, gathering by the fire reaffirms the essential truth: we need connection. We need spaces to share, to feel, to grow, and to reflect. By embracing this powerful act of coming together—through storytelling, journaling, and meditation—we cultivate a vibrant network that celebrates life’s intricacies and acknowledges our shared journey.

IT MEANS SPRING! 🌷☔️🍃

It’s when ideas and plans start coming into motion. It’s an an awakening of the mind and soul from the previous cold hibernating months of the water element (winter). Our whole being becomes alive. Our energy increases, and we feel the desire to be out among friends and family

When our wood element is in balance, we can make plans and move forward with them without hesitation. We are able to change or adjust these plans if need be without the anger or frustration. Like a tree in the wind, we can can bend without breaking.

So what can we learn from the Wood element? The key here is flexibility. If we hold ourselves too rigidly, we will break and crumble. If we are too loose and wobbly, like a badly rooted tree, there is no growth and real potential for change. So, the healthy balance is to remain flexible but engaged. Because the Wood element exemplifies the energy of growth, it is also about vision, planning and decision making, essential for creative change. Try to be assertive (not angry), flexible (not rigid), and remain engaged with our eyes on the important people and projects in our life.

I have only a few spots left for the 2nd beginner class on Tuesday! If you are interested in learning the ancient Chinese art of Qi Gong, please contact me directly. This class is the first in a series of lessons.

If you’re like most of us, the hustle and bustle of daily life can present us with challenges and uncertainties. The shifting of daily routines often creates stress and brings up questions about the future. While we’re not always able to control the circumstances that surround us, Qi Gong offers us powerful tools for letting go of stress and cultivating a calm and peaceful state within.

These simple yet effective moves will help to improve our focus, bring awareness back into our bodies and slow down our busy thoughts.

Beginner Workshops will be held at the Active Living Centre (senior centre) February 11th & 18th 6-8 pm.
This class will be part 1 of a 5 part series.

The following is a brief description of the workshops

1. Meditative or mindfulness (beginner). This is an intro to the Qi Gong practice. You will learn meditative movement while incorporating breathing techniques
2. Five Element The basis of Qi Gong theory. You will learn the meridians and organs associated with the moves.
3. Five Element Animal. Using the five elements while incorporating movements of animals.
4. Medical. A twisting or ringing out of the facia along our body and internal organs.
5. Martial Art style. I will be instructing a Luohan style. This a quicker more powerful form of qi gong.

For more information or to register, please contact Tammy at 204-572-4209

WINTER - WATER
Silence, Willpower, Trust, Courage & Wisdom

The first three weeks of December are a gift of the dark. The return of nature’s light began after December 21. (Winter solstice)

The beginning of winter is a time for hibernation. These weeks are for quiet, for reflection, for stillness, for rest, for calm, for tranquility, for healing, and most of all for a stop. This is a time to unwind; to be a hibernating bear; to burrow under the covers; to close your eyes and “sleep, and to dream.” Take this opportunity to pause and go inside yourself and ruminate. You will be glad that you took this time, as it builds up your energy reserves (kidney) for the rest of the year.

The dark is a magical time of year; a time of letting go and surrender as well as a time of germination and mystery. Take a deep breath, go into the dark and embrace the silence.

The Kidney, Bladder, Adrenal Glands, and Reproductive Organs are associated with the Spirit of Water which is called ZHI. ZHI is about our long-term memory and our willpower or drive and determination. We need rest and deep introspection to build our reserves which are the basis for successfully moving forward with our Life’s plan in the Spring.

Take the time to listen, listen to your thoughts; to the sounds of family or friends; to the sounds of silence when the snow falls; to the sounds of the birds etc. Trust by being in the present, knowing that when the Spring element (wood) begins to call for action that you will be able to respond. This is not a time for making decisions – that will come in the Spring with sufficient rest.
