Spring nettle tops have such a strong mint smell Ummm…Stir fry tonight!

Nettle tops, particularly stinging nettle leaves, offer a variety of health benefits, including potential relief from hay fever, arthritis, and even support for blood sugar control. They are also a good source of nutrients like vitamin C and various minerals.

There’s a silent habit that keeps many of us trapped in the modern world.

It’s so ingrained in our culture that many of us don’t give it a second thought each day.

A commonly overlooked fact - coffee is a potent herb. You might not think of coffee as a medicinal plant, but it certainly is.

The stiffest sources of caffeine that we brew in the morning belong to a family of herbs known as nervines.

Most herbalists view coffee as a strong nervine medicine that can be beneficial if you use it sparingly (once a week or less). But leading herbalists like Rosemary Gladstar believe that coffee can throw your mental and emotional balance out of whack and cause a number of related health problems when overused.

The good news is that there are a number of caffeinated nervines that can be brewed together with calming herbs to give you a nourishing boost of long-lasting energy throughout the day. And they don’t cause stress, anxiety or jitters.

Here are 3 amazing alternatives to coffee:
#1 Yerba Mate + Oatstraw + Nettle

Yerba Mate is a common Central American plant-It’s highly nutritious and packed with antioxidants. It is an overall stimulant that boosts your memory and hones your attention, gets your digestive system ready for the day and strengthens your immune system.

Nettle and Oatstraw are a dynamic duo that strengthens your blood and calms your body by nourishing and repairing your nervous system.

#2 Lemon Balm + Green tea = Afternoon Pick Me Up: Drinking green tea throughout the day is an ancient practice that has a pharmacopeia of beneficial properties. It is a powerful remedy for the heart as well, promoting better circulation, balancing cholesterol, can help you lose weight, boosts your memory and protects against neurodegenerative disease.

Lemon Balm is an effective remedy for stress and anxiety. It is an effective remedy for stress and anxiety. It calms your nerves but boosts your concentration.

#3 Adaptogen Night Time Brew: My favorite night-time adaptogen to take is Tulsi (aka Holy Basil), because it promotes proper flow of oxygen and chi. It’s also a pain killer and immunomodulator (works to balance out your immune function).

Noticing changes in your body in your mid-to-late 40s or early 50s? Your periods may be unpredictable—shorter, longer, heavier, or lighter than before. Sleep feels elusive, with early wake-ups and trouble falling back asleep. Your libido isn’t what it used to be, weight seems to be creeping up around your middle, and those inconvenient hot flashes are making their presence known.

Welcome to perimenopause—a natural transition that can feel anything but easy.

At this stage, many women, even those who have always preferred a natural approach, start considering hormone therapy, antidepressants, or sleep medications. For some, these are the right choice. But not every woman wants—or can take—hormones. And often, integrative and functional medicine doctors are quick to prescribe them as the first (or only) solution.

While I do prescribe HRT in my practice, I always offer non-pharmaceutical options first. For overall perimenopause support, these adaptogenic and herbal allies can be powerful:

🌿 Vitex – Supports estrogen and progesterone levels in perimenopause and may help reduce hot flashes.

🌿 Ashwagandha – Helps with sleep, stress resilience, cortisol balance, and anxiety.

🌿 Rhodiola – Boosts cognitive clarity, reduces brain fog, and lifts mood.

🌿 Reishi – Supports deep sleep and protects against cellular damage.

🌿 Motherwort – Soothes irritability, calms anxiety, and relieves heart palpitations.

🌿 Lion’s Mane – Supports memory, mental clarity, and helps with depression.

🌿 St. John’s Wort – A natural option for mild to moderate depression.

Perimenopause isn’t just a hormonal shift—it’s a major life transition, and sometimes that means letting the tears flow, honoring the changes, and supporting your body with what it truly needs.

If you’re experiencing any of these shifts, what’s been the most surprising or challenging change for you during this transition? Let’s talk in the comments.

Long before pharmaceuticals, our ancestors turned to nature for healing. They understood that every plant, every root, every spice carries a vibrational frequency that aligns with different parts of the body. Science is only now catching up to this ancient wisdom, revealing how foods can support brain function, heart health, digestion, and overall well-being.

Your body is not just a machine—it is an intricate, intelligent system designed to work in harmony with the earth. When we nourish ourselves with foods that resonate with our energetic blueprint, we experience deeper clarity, vitality, and balance. The mind, body, and spirit are interconnected, and what we consume affects not just our physical health, but also our mental and emotional state.

Let’s take a moment to honor the gifts of nature. What are your favorite healing foods, and how have they impacted your well-being? Share your experiences and let’s continue learning from the wisdom of the earth. 🌿🍵

Now that the busy month of September is over and the garden and greenhouses are harvested, yard work done and fresh meat hanging, I thought I would share what is hanging from my drying racks right now (soon to be replaced with moose meat 🙏)

Ceremonial Sweetgrass is used in smudging either alone or in combination with other scared plants. The lesson sweetgrass teaches us is kindness. When sweetgrass is walked upon, it bends, but does not break. So, one of the lessons of sweetgrass is that when someone does us an injustice or hurts us, we are to return it with kindness, as does the sweetgrass, by bending, not breaking when it is walked upon. It is often referred to as the hair of our mother, the Earth. Sweetgrass braids represent, "mind, body and spirit", "past, present and future", and "grandparents, myself, grandchildren." A sacred and honored plant that grows well pretty much wherever planted. I plant in large containers and once harvested, put the containers in the garden bed so it can winter over and regrow again the next spring, keeping separate from other grass.
