⭐️This week we focused on a new and fun medium - oil pastel!⭐️
Artist's were encouraged to create a floral bouquet still life on black paper! The dark background creates a dramatic moody effect to the delicate and sweet florals. 🌷🌼🪻
Artist's were taught how to blend oil pastels together to create smooth transitions between colours and shadows. Fun fact- Q-tips are an artist's best friend! 😉

This week’s artist’s got their hands messy with a classic medium- charcoal! ⭐️
Artist’s learned about reduction drawings which is the process in which the entire paper is covered in charcoal and the image is created by removing or “reducing” the charcoal with an eraser to create highlights and light tones.
This exercise was both fun and challenging, and taught artists to think a little differently! 🖌️🎨

Yesterday was all about focus as we worked on our Agamograph’s! ♥️
An agamograph is an optical art piece that creates an illusion of two changing images as you look at it from different angles. 🖼️
Created by alternating strips from two different artworks folded accordion style.

⭐️Check out this awesome art work that one of our after school students created with us this week! ⭐️
In this class the students were challenged to create an art work using only two colours to create a focal point. Highlighting the contrast between lightness and darkness and creating an image with a dramatic effect!

Summer School of the HeARTS

The year is 2020. The Dawson Creek Art Gallery temporarily closes their doors in February to perform quick renovations, not knowing they won’t reopen until June, due to a global pandemic. There is worry. There is disappointment. There are many, many cancellations and even more heavy hearts. But above all else, there is a community that must take care of each other. We here at the DCAG try to support that community with what we do best - creative, beautiful, powerful art.

Welcome to our 2020 Summer School of the HeARTS! Every two weeks, beginning on June 23rd, we will release free, take-home art packages for ages 5-12 and teens, bringing the creative experience to you!

Each youth pack contains five fabulous activities from each of the art “food groups” so that you can maintain a balanced creative diet this summer.

Explore - An art activity that begins with an outdoor adventure! As artists, we must first listen to and observe the world around us before we speak with our art.
