🛤️ Why Talk Therapy Isn’t Always Enough for Trauma Healing

Trauma isn’t just a story in the mind—it’s an experience stored in the body. While traditional talk therapy helps with insight, it often doesn’t reach the nervous system, where trauma lives. That’s why many trauma survivors still feel stuck, even after years of therapy.

To truly heal, we need a mind-body approach that works with the nervous system, emotions, and trauma-driven parts. Here’s a roadmap therapists can use to guide clients toward lasting recovery:

🔹 Safety & Stabilization – Before deep work, clients need tools to regulate emotions & feel safe in the present.
🔹 Identifying Trauma-Driven Parts – Helping clients recognize & unblend from survival-based parts.
🔹 Rewiring Survival Responses – Teaching the nervous system to shift out of chronic fight, flight, freeze, or fawn.
🔹 Processing Trauma Memories Safely – Healing at a pace that prevents overwhelm & retraumatization.
🔹 Rebuilding a Stable Sense of Self – Helping clients reconnect with their Adult Self & strengthen self-trust.
🔹 Integration & Post-Traumatic Growth – Moving from survival to a life built on resilience & meaning.

Understanding these steps can help therapists offer trauma-informed care that truly supports healing. Want to learn how to stabilize trauma-driven parts before deep processing?

Thank you to everyone who joined the free Radical and Whole-Hearted Self-Compassion Hour today. And thank you to everyone who supports and shares community care and supports others with self-care. I’m feeling gratitude for Plum and for all the people who have supported Plum.

Sometimes, doing something different is the hardest thing to do. For many years, I felt restricted in practice. Feeling like ‘company policy’ spoke about being trauma-informed but really only allowed staff to practice through a trauma-aware lens. Taking a step away and doing something different was new. Ultimately, doing something different for me, was building a space that could always be equitable, accessible, honouring of others, anti-oppressive, decolonial, embracing integrative practice, and invite agency in the counselling journey.

I feel so grateful for making space for anti-oppressive practice and am so grateful to witness other practitioners also make space for anti-oppressive practice.

Thank you for creating greater awareness of our value in this world. Victims-survivors living through abusive relationships need to know that they are valuable and deserve to be valued. 🩵

Repost from

You are a sacred bank of energy, love, wisdom, kindness, and light, and you are not responsible for depleting your bank to fill the banks of others.

For years, I thought my worth came from giving away whatever I had from this bank. The truth is most of the people I was giving it away to didn’t have the capacity to receive it, hold onto it, or generate it and give it back. The times when I gave and gave, and then was left empty, left my sense of worth feeling fragile – and illuminated that the people I was giving to didn’t know how to give back. I learned that giving all of myself away in hopes that people will love me and stay with me is a one-way ticket to burnout and disappointment. The truth is, you need to find the people whose banks are full and who know how to replenish them.

Your energy, love, vulnerability, and light do not need to be given away. The more you allow yourself to be in the glow of your sacred bank, the more you will inspire people to learn to fill their own and radiate it. How are you protecting your sacred bank today?
