We feel fortunate to be able to help out families with students going back to school this fall!
FCSS collects backpacks and school supplies for students in need every year.

A big thank you to Benchmark Hearing Centre Ltd. for their generous $500 donation to help purchase backpacks! They arrived this week and are ready to be put to good use!

We’re still collecting donations for the Staples School Supply Drive!

Drop-off locations:
• Staples Camrose, #306, 6800-48 Ave.
• Camrose FCSS office, 4821-51 St.

Kids are back to school on September 2, so the last day to pick up supplies will be Thursday, August 28.

Until then you can visit the Camrose Family Resource Centre (4823-51 St.) during pickup hours:
Mon–Thurs: 10am–2pm; Fri: 10am–12pm

Hearing loss and dementia: are there links? 🔗

Studies have shown that people who use hearing aids to manage their hearing loss are less likely to develop dementia.

Hearing aid use was also associated with fewer memory problems and thinking problems independent of dementia.

Tracking hearing aid use over a long period showed that it was associated with less decline in memory skills.

Canada in the War in Afghanistan

Canada's role in the Afghanistan War began in late 2001. Canada sent its first element of soldiers secretly in October 2001 from Joint Task Force 2, and the first contingents of regular Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) troops arrived in Afghanistan in January–February 2002.

The operations were aimed at identifying and neutralizing Al-Qaeda members in that country and toppling the Taliban regime which was supporting international terrorism.

Later operations in Afghanistan focused on security, reconstruction, and training the Afghan National Army (ANA) and Afghan National Police. The CAF made up the bulk of these missions.

The CAF had the highest per-capita casualty rate among coalition members. 159 Canadian soldiers died on missions in theatre and another 22 died in non-combat circumstances. Public opposition to the war grew over time, and the financial cost of Canada's contribution to the war was estimated as high as $18.5 billion by 2011. The last CAF soldiers left Afghanistan in March 2014.
