We’re excited to welcome another group of medical learners to DRDH!

This week, we are hosting three first-year medical students from Queen’s University, Giulianna, Sara, and Martina, as part of their Community Week experience. Community Week provides an opportunity for students to explore rural healthcare firsthand while connecting with the people, places, and experiences that make the Ottawa Valley such a special place to live and work.

We’re also pleased to welcome Tia and Tyler, two third-year medical students from Queen’s University, who have begun their 14-week Rural Generalist Clerkships with DRDH. During their time with us, community members may see them in clinic, the Emergency Department, and on the Medical Inpatient Unit as they gain valuable hands-on experience alongside our physicians and healthcare teams.

If you see Giulianna, Sara, Martina, Tia, or Tyler during their time in Deep River, be sure to say hello and help us show them what makes our community and rural healthcare experience so unique. 💙

DEEP RIVER AND DISTRICT HEALTH MARKS FIRST PRIDE FLAG RAISING AND LAUNCHES POSITIVE SPACES INITIATIVE

Deep River and District Health (DRDH) is continuing its commitment to creating safe, welcoming, and inclusive environments for patients, residents, visitors, and team members through ongoing education and the development of Positive Spaces across the organization.

This morning, DRDH marked the beginning of Pride Month with its first-ever Pride flag raising ceremony, attended by team members and organizational leaders. The event served as an opportunity to celebrate diversity, recognize the importance of inclusion within healthcare, and reaffirm DRDH’s commitment to creating spaces where everyone feels safe, respected, and valued.

This week, we were pleased to welcome two first-year medical students from the University of Ottawa to Deep River and District Health for their Community Week placement.

During their time with us, the students had the opportunity to experience firsthand what a future in rural medicine could look like here in Deep River through a variety of clinical and community experiences.

Pictured here are Dr. Doniya Quenneville and first-year medical student Omar wrapping up Community Week with an engaging morning of procedures in the North Renfrew Family Health Team Clinic.

In addition to their clinical placements, Omar and Natan also took part in activities with other visiting uOttawa medical students, including trail riding and white water rafting, helping showcase the lifestyle, outdoor opportunities, and strong sense of community that make the Ottawa Valley such a special place to live and practice.

Thank you to everyone who helped support and welcome these future physicians to DRDH and our community. 💙

Students from Mackenzie Community School recently visited DRDH as part of their Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program in Health and Wellness.

During their visit, students connected with DRDH team members to learn more about careers in healthcare and the many pathways available within the sector. As part of their current SHSM project focused on recruiting healthcare workers to rural communities, students also took part in an interactive session with the DRDH Communications team exploring healthcare marketing and recruitment.

Discussions highlighted the unique opportunities and challenges of rural healthcare recruitment, the importance of authentic storytelling and community connection, and how organizations build strong brands and reputations over time. Students also explored the “4 P’s” of marketing and how these concepts apply to promoting careers and lifestyle opportunities in rural communities like Deep River.

We were pleased to support this valuable learning opportunity and engage students in conversations about healthcare careers, communications, and the future of rural healthcare recruitment. 💙

Please be advised that flooring replacement work will begin at Deep River and District Health on Monday, May 25, 2026, as part of our ongoing Emergency Department renovation project.

Over the next several weeks, patients and visitors will notice temporary changes to hallway access and movement throughout the facility as work progresses in phases. Some entrances will also be temporarily closed while specific sections are completed; however, all hospital services will continue to operate as normal.

Clear signage will be posted throughout the hospital and care sites to help patients and visitors safely navigate impacted areas, and updates will continue to be shared as the project moves forward.

These upgrades are part of broader infrastructure improvements that will help support a safer, more modern, and welcoming care environment for our patients, residents, families, visitors, and team members.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as this important work is completed.

As Nursing Week comes to a close, we want to extend one final thank you to the incredible nursing team at Deep River and District Health. 💙

On Friday, we wrapped up the week with a popcorn bar and continued the fun with our “Find Flo” game, where team members searched for Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, hidden throughout their departments for a chance to win a prize draw.

Congratulations to all of our winners, and thank you to everyone who took part in helping us celebrate Nursing Week across DRDH.

Most importantly, thank you to our nurses for the compassion, professionalism, resilience, and care you bring to your work every day. Your dedication makes a meaningful difference to our patients, residents, colleagues, and community.
