Breathwork is a term used to describe various techniques that involve controlling your breathing in order to achieve a desired result. The most common form of breathwork is controlled deep breathing, which is used to promote relaxation and reduce stress. Other forms of breathwork include alternate nostril breathing, which is believed to balance the brain's hemispheres and improve mental clarity, and "circular" or "connected" breathing, which involves continuously flowing breath and is used to enhance awareness and access deeper states of consciousness.
Breathwork can be done alone or in a group and may be guided by a trained breathwork practitioner or self-directed. It is often used in conjunction with other techniques, such as meditation and visualization, to enhance their effects. Many people find that breathwork helps them to reduce anxiety and stress, improve their mood, and increase their overall sense of well-being.
There is some scientific evidence to support the effectiveness of breathwork. For example, controlled deep breathing has been shown to reduce blood pressure, heart rate, and levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Alternate nostril breathing has been shown to improve cognitive function and reduce the symptoms of conditions such as anxiety and depression.
Breathwork is generally considered to be safe, although it is essential to listen to your body and avoid pushing yourself too hard. If you are pregnant, have a heart condition, or have other health concerns, it is always best to consult your doctor before starting a breathwork practice. Breathwork can be a powerful tool for improving your mental and physical health and enhancing your overall sense of well-being.
In the picture, we were getting ready to do a breathwork session during a retreat in Costa Rica. We had a professional coach who guided us through it. It was a compelling experience, and it is definitely something I started to include in my daily routine!
