Today's focus is on SPIN-CYCLE class participants. (These are just half of the team). Often times it is hard for me to show you the things these amazing ladies can accomplish. We are going all the time. They made it through some pretty warm days and I am very happy to see them each and every time. Contrary to popular belief this class can build strength. It is challenging but it can be fun and it builds mental strength, cardio strength and endurance. Two things can be true at the same time. In my classes I try and allow my participants "to do you." We dim the lights and put on our twinkle lights and we add arms while maintaining patterns but nothing too fancy. These women are truly rock stars. They are funny and even if they are quite on the set LOL it is just that they are concentrating on getting through. I can hear them pushing themselves. I do not make eye contact - I use my old basketball skills as a point guard, by looking one way a passing the ball another way. This way they don't feel my eyes on them. They do what they are capable of and they have all come so far. At my studio nothing is as written, our cycle talk is designed to be simple not techy. No one has to figure out anything - the focus is on the ride. What I have found for myself that 1) it has helped me mentally
2) physically I have more endurance and strength in other areas of my life.
3) it is always challenging, especially when you don't feel like but you showed up. So when it's done, there is a feeling of satisfaction. How can something I really didn't feel like doing make me feel like I did something for myself - for me and that turns into a positive for everyone around me.
Cheers to my Spin-Cycle class. Love you all. Sandy you got to take film of all of us one day. Laura -RELAX YOUR BODY !!! (inside jokes)

Our Story

Mad About Fitness was how I felt for as long as I can remember. I came up with the name from a show I use to watch called Mad about You. I was born and raised in Niagara Falls Ontario. Fitness was a part of my life since I was a teenager. I was born with hip dysplasia and after an experimental surgery that landed me in a body cast for 3 mos. and went horribly bad... I got very depressed. I didn’t want to return to university or go back to my job as a fitness instructor and trainer. I was too “fat.” Some how that intrinsic fight back although hard allowed me to continue to pursue my dream of teaching others it was possible to take care of your body, mind and your spirit but you had to do the work. That was a long time ago.

I married the love of my life also from Niagara Falls & we ended up in a small town in 1987 called Dorchester where we raised 4 amazing kids. WE are still here. My business was all word of mouth. I worked in my home and then out in the community. Until 8 years ago I decided to make a change and venture out into a studio at the new arena in Dorchester. It started with myself and Tara Garland and my daughter Sarah who was a Kinesiology student at McMaster University part time, Amanda Travnicek also part time who was in Recreational Studies at Brock University. Amanda had been with me in so many of my fitness adventures since she was a teenager. We still didn’t advertise other than Face Book. Mad about Fitness became MAF.SC and Tara is still by my side, as well Dr. Sarah Coletti, Chiropractor, Medical Acupuncturist and PTS., Amanda (Travnicek) Cooper PTS who is married to Jeff and is the mother of a beautiful baby boy Knox who lives in Strathroy. Amanda is full time at the MS Society, Manager/Fund Development/Ont. Division and our MAF family has expanded with the addition of Renee Masney PTS and a new FIS in training Annelise Berkvens. My daughter Jennifer Coletti also a graduate of Kinesiology @ Queens University helps when she is available however she went back to study her masters.

I feel blessed that I have been in this line of work for 40 years this year. I will be turning 60. Although I have always had to work hard for my health and still do, I truly believe my mindset has allowed me the opportunity to work with people and give them something to believe in. Taking back their lives and owning it. People will often ask me what has kept me motivated all these years. I would have to say my faith and family support for certain but on a personal level in no specific order really because life changes. However, these following things matter a lot. Personal discipline, a bullet-proof mindset, a ton of sacrifice and being consistent. Showing up when you don’t want to. Holding yourself accountable. Writing it down. Putting my thoughts in to words is a lost art these days. That to me was is important because that is how I found true self. I found out my triggers, I found out what drew me out of my depression and self hatred. I learned to accept my mistakes and move ahead and always ask for forgiveness. I learned to find my true self in my writing. Finally, I cannot express this enough. Never ever stop learning and unlearning. Seek and you shall find. Get involved in learning from your peers, other professions and disciplines. I learn from my associates, my clients inspire me to learn with their needs, my kids and their ambitions inspire me to learn and re evaluate what I think is right. It is a never-ending journey of learning. When you stop learning you stop living. You will never know everything. However, it is always good to keep learning. For me its not about getting a lot of followers on FB or Instagram. It’s about the value I can give to others. We are a small town with what I believe is a gem of knowledge in our little studio. The people we work with and amongst us our greatest assets. Never think you are better just don’t think less of who you are and what you are capable of. Again, I am not going to lie. It takes a lot of work perhaps if you are like me it is a lifestyle journey. I think its worth it. I hope you do too !
