About a year ago, this man, Annie Prescott's husband, gave the gift of life to me, a selfless altruistic act of Living Liver Donation with the UHN Ajmera Transplant Centre.
As the recipient of his anonymous donation, it was the best Christmas gift - the gift of life for which I am forever 🙏 grateful. Anonymous no longer, shared with permission by Daniel Allan Farris. Please see Annie's post below. For more information on the UHN Liver Donor Program, you may visit:

Sheila's success story in today's Ottawa Citizen!

Though Sheila Young doesn't know the identity of her liver donor, she knows they were at the Toronto hospital at the same time.

01/03/2023

We have a wonderful update!
Sheila received a liver transplant from an anonymous living liver donor! Under the care of the Ajmera Transplant Centre at UHN, Sheila had a smooth recovery.
The day after arriving home, her phone alarm went off at 6 p.m. “Oh!” She exclaimed. “It’s Monday! My dance class is on now.” Propping her iPad on the dining room table, she embarked on her friend’s hour and a half online contemporary dance class. She'd been participating since Covid started. Some moves were done standing, some while seated and the cool down laying on the floor! Enjoy the video below. The miracle of life after transplant.
Big new year blessings to Sheila’s donor, of course, to Florentia, who so generously and cheerily helped daily during the post-hospital weeks at the Chelsea Hotel in Toronto, and to Orley - Sheila’s “Number One Rock” - and to all of you who have kept Sheila in your thoughts and prayers throughout! To each and every one of you who helped to spread the word about Sheila's need for a donor: THANK YOU!
Sheila's need for a living donor was on the front page of the Ottawa Citizen in March. A follow up story will be hot off the press any day now.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to everyone who is helping to spread the word about my need for a living liver donor with blood type O+ or O- between the ages of 16 and 60. I’m grateful to you. The transplant centre has told me that a donor has not yet been found.

My focus has been on what I can do to stay healthy. Positive thinking and actions bring joy. So I continue to enjoy cooking for a healthy diet. On the days when I have energy, I have continued to learn T’ai Chi with Ottawa’s Dovercourt Community Centre and to enjoy Modern Jazz with the Toronto Dance Collective.

Stories of living organ donors and of their champions are inspiring. They are truly angels. I have been learning more about myself and others through sharing my and others' life stories.

I continue to read and listen to life stories by Canadian writers—Recently, On the Border: Twenty Life Stories From Four Continents by Paul Bennett, Gathering Moss by Robin Wall Kimmerer, and Em and Vi by Kim Thuy. And currently: A Woman of No Importance by Sonia Purnell, What Strange Paradise by Omar L. Akkad, and Five Little Indians by Michelle Good. Above all, it is the human bonds of love that shine through these life stories.

I continue to write my life story. This time as a potential living organ donor recipient. Expressive writing has proven benefits for healing and awareness. I took a sneak peek at Dr. Sharon Bray’s webinar, Expressive Writing for those on their Transplant Journey, and their Caregivers: https://youtu.be/qca7JWjNTDo. I look forward to participating in Sharon’s May Webinar, hosted by Paula Neves.

This is hard for me to write. I need a living liver donor with blood type O+ or O– to donate at Toronto General Hospital (TGH).

For a person diagnosed with liver disease there is a long and difficult wait for a deceased donor. My health risk increases with time as my health declines. Sadly, some patients will die waiting. Every three days a person dies in Ontario because they don't get the lifesaving transplant they need.

Living liver donation is when a live person gives a portion of their liver to a candidate listed for a liver transplant. A living donor’s liver regenerates in just 6 to 10 weeks!

Anyone with blood type O+ or O- between the ages of 16 and 60 years and in good health (no diabetes, cancer, kidney or heart disease) can apply to be a living donor for me.

The donor does not need to be a relative or the same ethnicity (that matters for stem cells, not organs), just a healthy person with blood type O+ or O-.

The criteria for living organ donors is different than for blood donors. If you are not eligible to donate blood, you may still be able to be a living donor.

Since 1990, more than 1,000 living liver donor transplants have been done at TGH. All donors have returned to their regular lifestyle with no restrictions.

Candidates go through a comprehensive assessment to ensure they are healthy enough to donate.

For expenses like travel, food, accommodation and income replacement, there is a reimbursement program through Trillium Gift of Life for up to $5,500. They will reimburse expenses even if you get part-way through the screening process and change your mind or aren’t accepted. You can also submit receipts for reimbursement throughout the process and don’t need to wait until after the surgery. With this gift from a living liver donor, I would enjoy my grandkids, family and friends. I would share their favourite things: baking and decorating cookies, biking, camping, roasting marshmallows around a campfire, rock climbing, baseball, gymnastics, swimming, “Gen Z” podcasts, reading and video games.

I would go to Germany to visit my son, his lovely spouse, and her family. I would go to Toronto to see my youngest sister and stepmother. I would visit my sister in Dorchester near the Bay of Fundy. I would visit my husband’s family on Lake of the Woods near the Manitoba border. I would visit my friends.

From an early age dance has been part of my life. Dance has connected me to like-minded persons through Modern Jazz at the Toronto Dance Collective and through T’ai Chi at the Dovercourt Recreation Centre.

Many years ago I attended Lisgar Collegiate Institute in Ottawa and Canadian Junior College Switzerland, then York University (B.A. History), uOttawa (Honours Classical Studies), Graduate studies at Carleton University in Culture, Family and Gender (Anthropology & Sociology M.A. & Ph.D. ABD), and finally Graduate and Post-Graduate Teaching Assistant & Sessional Lecturer at Carleton and Ottawa Universities.

During my career I worked as a Guidance Technician and Library Technician at several Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) elementary and high schools and was then an analyst with Statistics Canada in Ottawa for 20+ years.
