First Year

Everyone will tell you that your first year of sobriety is hard but nobody tells you why it’s hard or what obstacles you’ll overcome. Here are a few things that I dealt with my first year.

1. Grieving the loss of alcohol
2. Facing my demonic emotions and learning that emotions will pass
3. Co-Occurring Mental Illness diagnosis that was only truly uncovered after 4 months of sobriety. Clinical Depression & Anxiety, ADHD, Bipolar Type 1 & 2, and Alcoholism
4. Facing traumatic events and learning my part in them
5. Wanting to escape and have a “geographic cure”
6. Finding many distractions
7. Becoming a workaholic to stay busy
8. Re-evaluating what having fun means and what relaxing looks like sober
9. How to properly use a support network
10. Fighting the urge to self-sabotage any chance you get
11. Understanding the drinking obsession eventually fades
12. I’m a recovering alcoholic and I’ll always have thoughts of drinking and that is normal and okay
13. Learning to created my own boundaries and understanding other people’s
14. Finding honesty and become willing yo change everything about the life you created in active addiction
15. That I am sick and need help with lots of support
16. Having faith that I can recover and if I relapse to learn from it
17. My addiction will knock on every door possible to try and get me to feed it again

The list goes on and on. These are simply the important ones I’ve experienced and feel like they’re worth mentioning. The good news is that you can overcome it but it does suck at the time and it is not easy. Happy 24.

Highly recommend to those in early recovery. A sober life is something we could never believe was possible. We certainly didn’t believe living sober would lead to so many positives.
