▪️Neuroplasticity 🧠▪️
Neuroplasticity is your brains ability to adapt and change. We have the ability to form new neural connections in our central nervous system throughout life so we can learn new skills as we grow.
Here is my example of neuroplasticity - riding a motorcycle. At first, it was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to learn since I didn’t even have a clue how the gears worked. Over the years I’ve studied, listened to experienced riders, and watched countless tutorial videos. I had a pretty good understanding of how to ride, but I never actually did any of the actual practicing part. I used every excuse in the book not to go practice - I was too short, or the roads were too busy, or I had to study for exams. Truth was, I was scared to be bad at something new. It wasn’t until this year that I decided I was tired of my own commentary inside my head! I just needed the confidence to actually do it! Which I’ve committed to and have been practicing every chance I can get! There’s days where I still find every excuse in the book to not go (like last weekend feeing like 35 degrees outside without moving let alone having full gear on 🥵) or have days where I’m not as good as I was the day before, but that’s ok! It all a part of the learning process.
The key to mastering a new skill is perseverance and consistency (and I’m still a long way from mastering this skill!)
Here is a picture of me from the weekend that my boyfriend took after we stopped for a break. My face tells it all - I’m melting from the heat and desperately wanting to quit after a rough start to the day. But that little voice in my head told me not to quit and I’m so glad I listened! We were able to get back on the road and it ended up being a much better ride after that.
Be brave enough to suck at something new! Your brain and body will thank you!
