Garden City Funerals & Cremations

Garden City Funerals & Cremations With roots in the St. Catharines community extending back more than a century.

09/08/2025

It is with a heavy heart, that I announce that Garden City Funerals (formerly Patrick J. Darte Funeral Chapel) will be closing its doors in downtown St. Catharines.
This decision was not made lightly. The challenges of operating downtown, the rising costs of maintaining our facility, and the changing needs of families have all played a role.

To the families who have trusted us with pre-arrangements: please be assured that your plans, and any funding in place, have been safely transferred to Darte Family Funeral and Cremation Centre (George Darte Funeral Home), a respected provider in our community. Your wishes will be honoured exactly as intended. If you have any questions, you may reach George Darte directly at (905) 937-4444.

We are also in the process of finding a new home for the obituary archive from our website and will communicate the details once plans are finalized.

Though this chapter closes, my dedication to serving families with compassion and care remains as strong as ever and my future is committed to funeral service. But, for today, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for your trust and support over these years.

A dear friend to myself and to our firm, Cathy Davis, has conducted many services here and has compassionately guided countless families through their most difficult moments. Sadly, her grandmother, Elizabeth “Betty” Lindsey, has passed away at the remarkable age of 102.

Betty lived a truly wonderful life — one that the family was wise enough to preserve in her own words through a recorded interview. Watching it is both heartwarming and inspiring, and it serves as a reminder of how priceless these conversations are.

If you are fortunate enough to have elderly loved ones in your life, I encourage you to take the time to record their stories. The memories, wisdom, and history they share will be treasures for generations to come.

Please join me in sending your condolences to Cathy and her family, and take a moment to watch this brief glimpse into the life of the extraordinary Elizabeth “Betty” Lindsey.

Elizabeth Jean Lindsey (née Burns) July 24, 1923 – August 8, 2025 After 102 years of laughter and love, Elizabeth Jean Lindsey (Betty) has finally decided to take a well-earned rest — although if you ask any of us, we still thought she had a few more parties left in her. Born in St. Catharines ...

I’m proud to share that I’ve officially graduated from the 2024–2025 National Emerging Leaders Program, hosted by the National Funeral Directors Association.

This past year has been one of immense personal and professional growth. I’ve had the privilege of learning alongside some of the most thoughtful, driven, and compassionate funeral professionals from across North America. Together, we explored the evolving challenges of funeral service and shared a collective commitment to leadership rooted in service, community, and integrity.

Though I wasn’t able to attend the graduation in person, I carry with me the lessons, conversations, and connections that will continue to shape the way I lead and serve in this profession.

To my fellow graduates—thank you. I’m better for knowing each and every one of you.

In every funeral we arrange, there is a story—a legacy—woven through the lives of those we serve. At Garden City Funerals & Cremations, we believe that a funeral is not simply a ceremony, but a profound opportunity to honour a life and the legacy left behind.

A legacy is not measured by years, but by the love, kindness, and memories shared with family and friends. Through every tribute, every gathering, and every shared story, we see the enduring impact that each individual leaves on the world around them.

As we look to the future, our commitment remains unchanged: to help families celebrate, preserve, and pass on the legacies that matter most. Thank you for trusting us to walk with you on this meaningful journey.

Because every legacy deserves to be remembered.

My name is Bryce Giroux, and I’m the owner of Garden City Funerals & Cremations.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside families through some of their hardest days. I don’t take that trust lightly. Here’s what a few of those families have said:

“He guided us through every step with patience and clarity.”
“There were unused funds—he returned them without me even having to ask.”
“Bryce made what could’ve been so much worse, much more bearable.”
“You can tell his heart broke for us, but he remained professional throughout.”
“Everything was seamless, respectful, and honest.”
“Dignity on a budget.”
“You make hard times easier.”

These aren’t just kind words—they’re reminders of why I do what I do.

I’m not a miracle worker. I can’t take away the pain.
But I can meet people with honesty, compassion, and clarity when it matters most.
I can make sure you never feel alone in the process.
And I can honour your loved one with the dignity they deserve—no matter the budget.

If that’s the kind of care you’d want for your family, know that we’re here when you need us.

☀️ Heat Wave Safety Reminder from Garden City Funerals & Cremations ☀️

As temperatures soar this week, we want to remind everyone—especially our elderly loved ones, young children, and those with health conditions—to take extra care.

High heat can be dangerous, even deadly. Here are some simple ways to stay safe:

✅ Stay Hydrated – Drink water frequently, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
✅ Stay Cool – Use fans, air conditioning, or visit a cooling centre if needed.
✅ Avoid Direct Sun – Stay indoors during peak sun hours (11 a.m. – 4 p.m.).
✅ Check In – Take a moment to check on neighbours, friends, and family who may be vulnerable.
✅ Know the Signs – Confusion, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, or fainting can signal heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Call 911 if you suspect someone is in distress.

As a funeral home, we see the real consequences when extreme weather is underestimated. Please take every precaution and encourage others to do the same.

💛 Let’s look out for one another.

“We know you see this every day…”

It’s something families often say to me through tears, perhaps as a way to acknowledge my role, or to minimize their own grief. But I want to gently say this:

Yes, I walk beside families in their darkest moments every day.
But you, your grief, your love, your story, is not just another day to me.

You are not part of a routine.
You are not a number.
You are someone navigating one of the hardest chapters life can offer, and I see you.

Your pain is real. Your loss is real. And it matters.

Grief is deeply personal. And whether you whisper through tears or sob from the soul, whether your goodbye is grand or simple, I promise: I will meet you with reverence, respect, and the compassion your loved one deserves.

Because this may be something I do every day—but you are not just another day.
