The goal of our national research program is to ensure that first responders (also known as Public Safety Personnel
or PSP) access crisis lines when needed and that they experience crisis line services as equitable, acceptable, safe, and effective.

A survey in Canada found that stigma can hold back public safety personnel from getting mental health support. We want to learn more about what role stigma plays in PSP decisions about whether or not to access crisis lines. Check out respondhub.ca to learn more about our work!

Did you know that close to half of first responders have experienced mental illness? Public Safety Personnel (PSP), including first responders, experience higher rates of mental health symptoms and suicidal behaviours then the general population.

Crisis lines are an essential part of Canada’s Su***de prevention framework and can be a life-saving service. However, we do not know if PSP find crisis line services useful.

The RESPond Study research team is working with first responders every step of the way to understand whether crisis line services are appropriate, effective, equitable and safe for PSP.

Welcome to the RESPond hub!

We are working with Talk Su***de Canada, a national su***de prevention crisis line service, to better understand what first responders want and need from a crisis line. First responders have been identified as a priority group for su***de prevention because they are more likely to experience mental distress, post-traumatic stress injury, and suicidality, due to the nature of their work and challenges in accessing mental health services.

Crisis lines are an effective strategy for su***de prevention but this has not been well studied among first responders. Right now, we know very little about who, how, or why first responders access crisis line services, what barriers they may face in making use of these services, and whether the crisis line services offered are acceptable and effective. Similarly, there is limited understanding of the unique needs, professional identities, and strengths that may impact the experiences of first responders who access crisis lines.

We are working with first responder organizations and individuals living across Canada to better understand what they need and want in a crisis line service. We would love to connect with you!
