SCE Myth Buster #16:
Sadly, there is a prevailing myth that incontinence is a natural part of aging and must be tolerated.
“Not so!” says Patti Emery.
In the fall of 2024, Patti was diagnosed with Pelvic Floor Dysfunction. In her case, it resulted in uncontrollable incontinence. But she knew it was a condition that could be treated.
Patti believes that many women (and men) silently endure this condition. She encourages others to research the issue, seek evaluation from a Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist, and commit to pelvic floor strengthening exercises.
Patti urges older adults not to accept the misconception that incontinence is always an inevitable aspect of older age. She wants others to know that there are effective interventions and therapies available that work. With proper support, guidance, and perseverance, individuals can reclaim control and improve their quality of life.
Thanks, Patti for refusing to let incontinence define your age and for helping to bust the myth that just because we get older, we always lose bladder control and there is nothing to be done about it! You are living proof that it just isn’t so! ♥
