About the Role

We are seeking a reliable and detail-oriented Dental Sterilization & Hygiene Assistant to join our growing dental team. This role is essential to maintaining exceptional infection control standards while supporting our dental hygienists and ensuring smooth clinic flow.

Key Responsibilities
• Clean, disinfect, package, sterilize, and store dental instruments following Alberta IPAC standards
• Operate and monitor sterilization equipment (autoclaves, ultrasonic cleaners, washer-disinfectors)
• Perform and document daily, weekly, and monthly sterilization tests
• Prepare and turn over operatories efficiently between patients
• Stock treatment rooms and maintain organization of clinical areas
• Assist dental hygienists during appointments as needed
• Take dental radiographs (if certified)
• Support patient comfort and maintain a professional, welcoming environment
• Follow all clinic policies, privacy standards, and workplace safety procedures

Qualifications
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Dental sterilization or IPAC training preferred
• Previous dental clinic experience an asset
• X-ray certification (AB Health Services / ACPAC / equivalent) an asset
• Strong attention to detail and time management skills
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced clinical setting
• Professional, dependable, and team-oriented attitude

Job Description

Position Summary

The Dental Sterilization & Hygiene Assistant plays a vital role in maintaining a safe, efficient, and patient-centered dental clinic. This position is responsible for instrument sterilization, infection control, operatory turnover, and assisting dental hygienists with clinical and patient-care tasks. The role supports high standards of cleanliness, organization, and patient safety in compliance with provincial regulations and clinic policies.

Key Responsibilities

Infection Control & Sterilization
• Clean, disinfect, package, sterilize, and store dental instruments according to clinic protocols and provincial guidelines
• Operate and monitor sterilization equipment (autoclaves, ultrasonic cleaners, washer-disinfectors)
• Perform and document daily, weekly, and monthly sterilization tests (biological, chemical, and mechanical indicators)
• Maintain accurate sterilization logs and report any failures immediately
• Ensure proper handling and disposal of biohazardous and sharps waste
• Maintain compliance with IPAC (Infection Prevention and Control) standards

Operatory & Clinic Support
• Prepare and break down operatories before and after patient appointments
• Stock and organize treatment rooms with required supplies and materials
• Maintain cleanliness of clinical areas, sterilization room, and common spaces
• Assist with inventory management and restocking dental and hygiene supplies

Hygiene Assistance
• Assist dental hygienists during procedures as needed
• Prepare trays and materials for hygiene appointments
• Take dental radiographs (if certified)
• Support patient comfort and chairside efficiency
• Perform suctioning, charting assistance, and room turnover

Patient Care & Communication
• Greet and es**rt patients to treatment areas
• Provide reassurance and support to patients during appointments
• Educate patients on post-appointment care and oral hygiene instructions when appropriate
• Maintain patient confidentiality and professionalism at all times

Qualifications & Requirements
• High school diploma or equivalent required
• Dental Sterilization / IPAC training or equivalent experience preferred
• Dental Assisting or Hygiene Assistant experience considered an asset
• X-ray certification (if applicable, per provincial requirements)
• Strong understanding of infection control procedures
• Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
• Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced clinical environment
• Professional, reliable, and team-oriented
