New research reveals that dancing may be the most effective exercise for treating depression, outperforming traditional antidepressants and yoga.

According to a comprehensive 2024 meta-analysis published in The BMJ, dancing is a potent science-backed antidepressant that provides larger reductions in depression symptoms than walking, strength training, or medication alone. The study, which reviewed 218 trials involving over 14,000 participants, highlights how the unique combination of physical exertion, rhythm, and emotional expression creates a neurochemical symphony in the brain. By simultaneously releasing serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin while lowering cortisol, dance offers a multi-layered approach to mental wellness that traditional solitary exercises often lack.

Beyond the physiological perks, dancing acts as a form of somatic therapy that helps break the cycle of negative rumination and enhances mindfulness. When performed in groups, it fosters interbrain synchrony, strengthening social bonds and enhancing the overall therapeutic effect. Because it is highly accessible and requires no gym membership, researchers are now advocating for dance to be considered a front-line treatment or a powerful complement to psychotherapy. Whether in a living room or a ballroom, moving to the beat is proving to be a safe, cost-effective, and transformative tool for managing anxiety and depression across all age groups.

💔Emotions are real, and they deserve to be acknowledged — even the uncomfortable ones. This weekend, I felt a little FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out). It’s not something that visits me often.
👀I came across some members of our “Do You Wanna” page out for a walk together. I’d heard a bit of chatter about the plan earlier, but I knew I wouldn’t be able to join because of other commitments, so I didn’t think much more about it.
👫👫Then I saw them together on a beautiful February Saturday, walking down one of my favourite roads… and there it was. That little pang of FOMO.🥺
But almost as quickly as it arrived, it shifted into gratitude.💓
What I saw was exactly what the "Do You Wanna" page is intended to do. Connect people - in an active, living community.
And for that, I can't help feel anything but grateful.🙏

We talked about this after our positive affirmations meditation during our Resist, Stretch, and Meditate class this morning. With everything going on in the world today, it's easy to get caught up in the negative. Instead, try and look for the good and to practice living with an attitude of gratitude. There's so much to be thankful for if you just take the time to notice. Here is the link to the meditation that we did. https://youtu.be/1Kuvo9BSmBg?si=Yyqg6rCoejX-SHay

🔥Every time our Nordic walking group heads out, I’m reminded how lucky we are. 😊We talk, laugh, share stories, exchange knowledge, and learn from each other, all while working 90% of our body's muscles.💪🏻Not bad for something that feels more like hanging out with friends than “exercise.”
🌄And honestly… being outside in the Drumheller Badlands at the beginning of February without wearing more than 2 layers is a bonus and makes every step feel like a gift.
❓If you’ve ever wondered what Nordic walking is all about, come take a Nordic Walking for Beginners class and find out for yourself. You might just discover your new favourite way to move.😍
