Rod McLean is an Indigenous Registered Acupuncturist who understands the impact of stress, trauma and genetics on health and aims to help clients benefit from a full health experience. Rod McLean is an Indigenous Registered Acupuncturist who understands the impact of stress, trauma, genetics and culture on human health. With his skills, he seeks to help each client obtain balance and experience the full potential of health in their lives. From philosophy to photojournalism, anthropology to archaeology, Rod’s curiosity about the human condition and what makes people and cultures healthy, beautiful and sustainable has been the guiding question. When Rod found the system of Chinese Medicine, he landed in the path of deeper discovery that combines the benefits of Modern Western Medicine and physiology studies and research with the ancient Chinese Indigenous medicine of harmony and balance. The mix of settler and Indigenous influences that Rod grew up in inspired the questions that have led him to Traditional Chinese Medicine. The personal, ancestral and community traumas that he was influenced by are harmonized and healed by attending to the well being of the body, mind and spirit in a focused and systematic way. Rod is familiar with the challenge of repairing from sports injuries, as he has enjoyed the seasonal sports of soccer and hockey and the ski hill for most of his life. He personally practices the aspects of Chinese Medicine that keep his own body, mind and spirit in balance as he gratefully lives in Coast Salish territory. He spends his time outdoors, fishing, making photos and adventuring with his wife, daughter, family and friends.

This article has some evocative ideas and some nourishing concepts. From a Chinese Medicine perspective; hiking through the woods for a good long time, jogging along winding trails, or walking beside the river, lake or ocean are all nourishing for us.

We are ancient creatures (3 million years), we have a long history of walking through our days, and we have only recently learned to farm and sit down (10,000 years). Walking for an hour or so in any natural setting is good for moving our qi from organ system to organ system or element to element (Five Elements); we have an ancient, natural metabolism that is harmonized by movement in nature.

As the treadmill of life speeds up, sublime outdoor spaces help us tap into timescales that are longer, slower, planetary

For people who are experiencing low energy or low iron, brain fog, muscle degeneration, tendon tightness or fragility and more, check out this article on organ meats.
From an anthropological perspective, our species has interacted with organ meats for thousands of years. Only recently did we switch to focusing on the differences between the cuts of the muscle. There is far more nourishment in the organs than the muscle, but for those who prefer a steak over a liver, there are many supplements available.

"Harmony is the energy that binds all things together."

-Anishinabe Teaching from the Seven Grandfathers

We are all walking through our lives in constant fluctuation of harmony and disharmony. Chinese Medicine is oriented towards bringing a state of harmony into the body and mind. 'Homeostasis' in Western terms. When we are more in harmony with ourselves, we are more flexible with our thinking; more resilient in times of stress; more nourishing with our choices;
More open to wonder and possibility.

When I walk in Monica Meadows, I feel wonder and possibility.

Leesa Dean, a local author and Selkirk College teacher, has been a patient of mine for a while. Here is what she has to say:

"I have been one of Rod's clients for years now, ever since he was a Chinese Medicine student. He has treated me for a vast array of conditions ranging from chronic sciatica to headaches, fatigue, and various temporary ailments. He's a knowledgeable and compassionate practitioner, but more importantly, every time I walk out of an appointment with him, I feel 1,000 times better. Often he is able to treat my symptoms in just 1-2 visits. Rod is a pillar in my self-care plan and I highly recommend him as a practitioner!"
