Happy OT Month! October is Occupational Therapy month and better late then never to post, right? It's been a busy month at Sage Holistic Occupational Therapy and I had the best intentions to make a great reel on all the coolio and unique things that we do at Sage Holistic Occupational Therapy that may be different than other types of therapy. What we were so busy with this month...everything in this picture!

🌿meditation
🌿mindful movement
🌿head stands...yes, head stands!
🌿drawing out our constellations of our 'parts' (emotions, thoughts, inner child)
🌿bodywork
🌿accupressure
🌿self care
🌿self compassion
🌿supportive listening
🌿Eye movement (Polyvagal tools and Brainspotting)
🌿nice chats walking in nature
🌿binaural music to stimulate both sides of our brain
🌿sound therapy and sound vibrations
🌿going on a drive and facing fears

Oh and Breathwork… and I’m sure more 😊

Yup...it’s been a busy month...but oh so much fun and exciting to join our clients on their journey.

Happy OT month to all those who love OT like us!

Our first online group offering! Join us on Monday evenings in November for a group on Mindfulness and Meditation. There will be some information shared on benefits of Mindfulness, how it can be beneficial for Anxiety and Depression, but mainly, this will be an experiential and practice group.

As the temperatures start to change, it starts getting darker earlier and hibernation mode starts to creep in, join us for some practice of different ways to use Mindfulness and Meditation.

This can be for new, waitlisted or current clients. For those who have a Status Card, it will be covered under NIHB, along with your regular sessions.

Limited space, so reach out today if you are interested.

It’s World Gratitude Day! Actually, everyday can be Gratitude Day.

Sometimes challenges in life and our brains default negativity bias can limit how we see things. When we choose the attitude of gratitude, for the pleasant and unpleasant in our lives, the big or the small, it changes the picture.

Here’s my three for today…
🌿a hibiscus plant I was given 10 years ago from a very special Aunt who taught me the power of gratitude in prayer. She has passed to the spirit world now and after 3 years of no blooms, the hibiscus is in full bloom.

🌿my special morning space for yoga, meditation and prayer. Some days it’s an hour and some it’s 2 minutes and some days I miss it completely. Grateful for my imperfectly perfect practice.

🌿natural spring water from a local well that tastes amazing and hydrates me for the day. I’ve started drinking 1 liter every morning as soon as I wake up to regulate my nervous system, cortisol levels and sleep.

Comment below three things you are grateful for today.

Link to some gratitude research Im comments.

More fun learning lately this month! One “body” based and one “brain” based (on first look) but they are actually both body-mind-spirit approaches.

First up was a much anticipated cranial sacral course. Bethany learned techniques on assessing and treating restrictions in the cranialsacral system (aka head to tail) and improving the flow of the cerebrospinal fluid.

Next will be Brainspotting. A cool psychotherapy tool for treating trauma by using eye movement, mindfulness and activating different areas in the brain to help with deeper processing.

Best part of integrative therapies are that they are unique with their approachs but same theories underlying so they mix so well together.

Had a great time at Family Fun Day with our friends at Native Women’s Centre in Hamilton this week. This time we had some help from our own family! Was great to see some familiar faces and meet some new people in the community, spreading the word about NIHB counselling funding for people with Status Card.

Bethany has recorded another meditation! If you didn't know already, we've got a Spotify Channel where you can listen to meditations. These are often provided as home practice in therapy sessions to continue the processing that happened during a session into your everyday life.

Today's was on building up our Self Energy and self-compassion by tuning into natural elements of Earth, Water, Wood, Wind and Fire.

Do you know what fractals are? Keep reading to find out...and even if you do know, you may be interested to know how they relate to our mental health...

Getting out into nature is good for ones mental health- a known fact and likely something most of us know without needing to know the science behind it. It just feels good to smell fresh air, feel the sun and to hug a tree. But there's more to it than that! Sometimes knowing the mechanism behind it can be helpful to understand just why getting out into nature is so important.

This is where fractals come into play. I recently learned about this word. Fractals are repeating patterns on the same thing in different scales and are often found in nature- a forest, a tree, a leaf...in clouds, on mountain scape, in a snow flake. And why are fractals so important? When are brain processes fractals, the brain is able to do so in a passive and restorative way. Basically we don't have to work at resetting ourselves- nature does it for us. This reset has been shown to improve directed attention and lessen rumination. You can learn more on a recent podcast by HubermanLab ( https://youtu.be/ewnvjnuFTOY).

Are you needing more time in nature? Ask about our 'Nature Prescription' that we can provide through ParX- a free Canada Parks pass for clients who would benefit from more time in nature (ie: everyone!)
