Veterans Affairs Canada, in collaboration with Health Canada, have measures in place to ensure the availability of cxnnabis to veterans who use it for medical purposes. This is why Veterans Affairs Canada developed a cxnnabis for medical purposes reimbursement policy. ⁣

As a veteran, you may be eligible for financial support for your medical cxnnabis through Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC). Through VAC, reimbursement of up to 3 grams of dried cxnnabis per day (or its equivalent in other cxnnabis formats) is available on a range of products at a rate of $8.50 per gram.⁣

𝘐𝘴 𝘢 𝘤𝘹𝘯𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘴 “𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯” 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘢𝘴 𝘢 “𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘳”?⁣

The term 𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘳 originates from two words “cultivated variety”. A 𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘳 is a botanical or horticultural group that is used to describe a plant that has been domesticated and changed through human selection. ⁣

The term “variety” is often used interchangeably with 𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘳 although is thought to be a less-specific term. The use of the term 𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘳 is also connected to the breeding of plants through seeds rather than cloning.⁣

A “strain” is a term that is often used in microbiology or virology to define a genetic variant within a microorganism such as different strains of the flu virus. For example, there are over 60 strains of flu that have been identified globally. ⁣

Another example can include COVID-19 variants that are essentially mutated versions of the original parent virus that will eventually become distinct strains of the virus. It is not regularly used to describe plants but may be used in relation to the modification of a plant such as the genetic alteration of wheat.⁣

The reasoning for the use of the term 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯 is thought to be connected to the use of clones in cxnnabis propagation. The use of 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯 appears commonly in cxnnabis terminology but not in other botanical plant descriptions.⁣

For many cxnnabis growers, using the term 𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘳 is preferred as they are referring to cultivated varieties of cxnnabis plants that have been domesticated and hybridized through human interaction.⁣

In 2009, Dr. Phil Leveque claimed that Queen Victoria was the first woman to use cxnnabis for Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS). He wrote that Victoria was prescribed by Sir John Russell Reynolds who was a physician to the Queen. Dr. Reynolds wrote in 1890 that “𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘱𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘥𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘭𝘺, [𝘤𝘹𝘯𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘴] 𝘪𝘴 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘷𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴 𝘸𝘦 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘴𝘴.” ⁣

However, the facts do not bear investigation as the Queen would have been in her 60s at the time of prescription and well past the need to address the effects of PMS. Furthermore, Virginia Berridge in her paper “Queen Victoria’s Cannabis Use: Or, How History Does and Does Not Get Used in Drug Policy Making’” states that this “strange” fact emerged in the 1990s alongside the international debate and promotion of the medical benefits of cannabis. It seems that if contemporary medical cxnnabis advocates could state that if the Queen had taken cxnnabis medicinally, if was a drug that should be considered effective in this era. ⁣

Interestingly, many contemporary physicians have stated that 𝐂𝐁𝐃 (𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘰𝘭) is effective for the treatment of 𝐏𝐌𝐒, 𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐬, 𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐬, 𝐢𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐧𝐢𝐚, 𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐱𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐬 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐚𝐬 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐩𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞. ⁣

It does make a great story that Queen Victoria was partaking in cxnnabis. However, the evidence is not clear at this point in time. Although, Dr. Reynolds promoted the use of cxnnabis as a therapeutic medicinal, there is no written evidence that the Queen was prescribed or used cxnnabis for any of her various ailments.⁣

However, there are some flavonoids that are unique to the cxnnabis plant, and they are known as cannaflavins. 𝐂𝐚𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐧𝐞 (𝐀𝐊𝐀 𝐅𝐁𝐋-𝐎𝟑𝐆) is a cxnnabis unique flavonoid and can be found in a cultivar originating from Jamaica known as “Black Swan”. ⁣

Although, research results remain at the pre-clinical level (animal testing), it shows promise as exposure to Caflanone can help to boost the amount of cancer cells that are destroyed during each radiation session. 𝘍𝘭𝘢𝘷𝘰𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘉𝘪𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘩 is currently collaborating with 𝘏𝘢𝘳𝘷𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘔𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘚𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭 and has clinical trials (human testing) scheduled to begin in late 2021. ⁣

When we stop to smell a rose or a sprig of lavender, we are smelling the terpenes created by that plant. Terpenes are aromatic compounds that are produced predominantly by plants and some animals.⁣
⁣
In nature, terpenes provide many functions including protection from germs and predators as well as the attraction of pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Some terpenes also help the plant recover from damage and boost their immune response. ⁣

The terms “𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘴” and “𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘪𝘥𝘴” are often used interchangeably, however, terpenes and terpenoids are the not the same. 𝘛𝘦𝘳𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘴 are defined as the natural form of these compounds in a live plant while 𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘪𝘥𝘴 are the result of terpenes in plants that have dried and become oxidized. ⁣

Myrcene has numerous properties and is known as an analgesic, relaxant, and sedative. Preclinical trials have shown that Myrcene acts as a pain reliever and reduces inflammation. ⁣

Other preclinical trials have discovered that Myrcene has to potential to protect the brain and heart tissue from damage following a stroke.⁣
When used in combination with cxnnabinoid treatment, studies have shown that Myrcene alters the blood-brain barrier allowing the brain to better absorb and process THC and CBD. ⁣
