Often people believe that if they push through their back pain, it will eventually disappear.

Do you?

Just the other day, I saw a patient with that mindset. She figured she just had to keep pushing herself, even if it meant irritating her back.

Maybe you’ve thought the same thing. Maybe you tell yourself, “No pain, no gain,” or “My back will toughen up eventually.”

But here is the thing: that’s not how back pain gets better.

Think about it this way – if you stub your toe on the same table leg every day, would you expect your toe to get better? Of course not. It would stay sore, maybe even get worse.

So why expect your back to get better if you keep irritating it?

The key to back pain relief, isn’t to fight through the pain. It’s to figure out what is causing it and then remove that source of irritation. Once you do that, the pain can subside, and healing can occur.

So please, don’t ignore your back pain. Don’t expect your back to get used to it. Don’t just push through it hoping it’ll just go away.

Instead, take the smarter path: Find the cause. Remove the cause. Give your back a chance to recover.

If you're struggling with back pain that just won't go away, it is likely because you are putting more strain on your back than it can handle. (At least if you are like the majority of back pain patients I see).

This is the most overlooked aspect when it comes to actually healing and overcoming back pain.

Here are three ways people put excessive strain on their back:

1. Performing Stretches and Exercises That Replicate the Pain
Many people try to "stretch" the pain away, but exercises like toe touches or sit-ups can make things worse by replicating the exact strains that cause the pain. To recover, it's essential to focus on exercises that don't excessively strain your back.

2. Adopting Postures That Put Extra Strain on Your Spine
How you sit or stand matters more than you think. Many people adopt habitual postures that actual make their pain worse. The key is to vary your posture and avoiding the postures that irritate your back.

3. Doing Too Much Without Enough Rest
Pushing through discomfort might seem like determination, but it's more likely to worsen the problem. Listen to your body, take breaks, and don't overdo it.

If you want to overcome back pain, the first step is to stop doing the things that cause it.

Your spine can only handle so much strain before pain sets in.

Take care of your back, give it time to recover, and you’ll build a stronger, more resilient spine in the long run.

Struggling with back pain even though you stretch regularly? You’re not alone! Many people face this challenge.

Here’s a quick overview of why stretching might not be helping—and what to do instead.

Why Stretching Doesn't Work
1. Stretching Can Trigger Pain: Some stretches may mimic movements that cause discomfort.
2. It Doesn’t Fix the Root Cause: Stretching might not relieve the strain that’s causing your pain, just like stretching an sprained ankle won’t help if you keep putting pressure on it.
3. Stability Is Key: Many spinal injuries need stability, not just flexibility. Focusing on stretching is the opposite of what you need to do.

What to Do Instead:
1. Stop stretching.
2. Identify what’s causing your pain by keeping a journal to track activities and postures that worsen your discomfort.
3. Adjust your movements and consider stability exercises to avoid pain triggers.
