PCOS is now being recognized as PMOS
What is changing?
Many health professionals and researchers are discussing changing the name from PCOS (Polycystic O***y Syndrome) to PMOS (PolyMetabolic-Ovarian Syndrome) because the condition affects much more than just the ovaries.
Why the new name PMOS?
The term PCOS mainly focuses on ovarian cysts, but many women with PCOS:
Do not actually have ovarian cysts
Experience metabolic and hormonal issues throughout the body
May struggle with:
Insulin resistance
Weight gain
Fatigue
Acne
Irregular periods
Anxiety and mood changes
Infertility
Increased risk of diabetes and heart disease
The proposed name PMOS (PolyMetabolic-Ovarian Syndrome) highlights that this is a whole-body metabolic and hormonal condition - not just an ovarian issue.
Important to know
PCOS has not officially changed everywhere yet
Many doctors and organizations still use the term PCOS
PMOS is part of ongoing discussions to create a name that better reflects the condition
“PCOS is more than cysts. It is a metabolic and hormonal condition that deserves better understanding, early support, and compassionate care.”
