Luxury ✨ Winter ❄️ Chicken πŸ“ Care ~ a little too late 😳

Though much of the advice is do not pamper your chickens with heat in the cold, poor Roosty ( Axel S'more Drumstick our Swedish Flower Rooster) suffered from the prolonged extreme cold so we've hung two heat lamps for -15 Celsius or colder nights. His frost bitten comb and wattles, as terrible as they look, appear to be healing well, and perhaps he'll be left with skin better adapted to the Arctic air?

Eastern Screech πŸ¦‰ Owl!
Never under estimate the predators! I held this owl two days ago when I thought it was trapped in the coop, it weighs next to nothing! What's it going to do with a chicken four times its size? Upon removing the dead chicken it swiftly flew out the small chicken door and out through the rafters of the outdoor run!

Luxury ✨ Winter ❄️ πŸ“ Chicken πŸ’œ Care ~ aka $7/ dozen project

Though this project of care didn't cost much in materials, all repurposed plastic and hardware. . . It was a good 2 to 4 hours of Jess' time sourcing material, relocating, and assembling over the past weekend.

The outdoor run got snow and wind protection and jess hauled 6 buckets of dry shavings from the greenhouse to cover the frozen ground for naked chicken feet. The flock immediately took to the improvements and now spend way more time outside enjoying their compost, fermented feed, and the sun!

We also removed the drift of snow on the outdoor run ( no easy feat, think weightlifting on a balance beam) to allow more sunlight through their coop window, which has a direct correlation to egg production and fertility.

We used to be of the mind to let them tough it out and become more hardy , but clearly there's a limit, and drafts at minus 20 Celsius consecutively is where nature draws a line.

πŸ‘€πŸ¦‰ Look what we encountered on the way to the coop this morning!! Video in comments πŸ‘‡

Fresh blood 🩸 in the snow, silence at the coop. . . And this tiny screech owl!!

It refused to fly out the open door , and was getting stressed, so we gently helped it outside.

Chicken Math - 1/41

We have 24 chickens and wanted to replace and double the size of the flock by June...

How many eggs should we hatch?

24x2x2= 96!!! Given that likely 50% will be males. . .

We have two incubators going right now a 41 egg capacity and another that holds 48.

Monday evening we candled the first group to check for signs of life that should be obvious by 10 days of incubation. . .

Out of 41 eggs there was only 1 that had a chick developing inside!

Shout out to our fabulous neighbours Homestead From Hatch who lent us their styrofoam incubator and received Jess' depressed venting after Monday's day 10 candling results 😀☹️πŸ₯°

Bubbles 🫧 It's alive! 🦠
$7/ dozen is what we're committed to raising the price of our eggs to this spring as we double the flock size and provide luxury care through the winter. . . By adding water to their feed in a sealed container, it ferments, which is easier for digestion and a warm treat during the -20 Celsius weather #$7/dozen
