Luxury β¨ Winter βοΈ π Chicken π Care ~ aka $7/ dozen project
Though this project of care didn't cost much in materials, all repurposed plastic and hardware. . . It was a good 2 to 4 hours of Jess' time sourcing material, relocating, and assembling over the past weekend.
The outdoor run got snow and wind protection and jess hauled 6 buckets of dry shavings from the greenhouse to cover the frozen ground for naked chicken feet. The flock immediately took to the improvements and now spend way more time outside enjoying their compost, fermented feed, and the sun!
We also removed the drift of snow on the outdoor run ( no easy feat, think weightlifting on a balance beam) to allow more sunlight through their coop window, which has a direct correlation to egg production and fertility.
We used to be of the mind to let them tough it out and become more hardy , but clearly there's a limit, and drafts at minus 20 Celsius consecutively is where nature draws a line.
