I visualize Phil, my Fibro Monster, as a silly cartoon monster who is not well-behaved and often has temper tantrums. This helps to make him less scary, thereby taking away his power. Fibromyalgia flares are often scary because we don't know their duration or intensity. So anything we can do to take away its power is one more tool to manage it.

The long, sunny days of summer are finally here, and while we haven't had any real heat waves to speak of (knock on Extremely hard wood!), staying hydrated is still very important.

But let's be real, plain water is BoRiNg!!! How can we make staying hydrated more appealing? Let's take a look!

1. Frozen fruits. I love adding frozen fruit to my water. There are always some frozen lemon slices in my water, but every once in a while, I've been known to go a little crazy and toss some frozen berries, pineapple, mango, or even some fresh mint leaves from my garden.

2. Juices. I am not the biggest proponent of juicing, because you lose the fibre while concentrating the sugar, but with all the beautifully delicious fruits ripening now, how can you resist? Juicing is a great way to also sneak some veggies in for those picky eaters! Apples, carrots, ginger, lemons, and pears make a delicious, refreshing combination.

3. Smoothies. Made at home, smoothies are a great way to get many gut-healthy fruits and veggies into you! Commercially made smoothies are loaded with calories, making it at home allows you to know the ingredients. My favourite smoothie is pineapples, mangoes, peaches, almond milk and coconut yogurt.

4. Popsicles or freezies. Summer screams for frozen treats, and you can make some delicious homemade popsicles. Combine your favourite sliced fruits with coconut water and pour into your favourite mould for a tasty and nutritious treat.

5. Fruits and Veggies. Yup, you can eat yourself hydrated! Think melons, cucumbers, berries, celery, and tomatoes - anything juicy is going to hydrate you!

Come make breakfast with me!

This morning we're making Upleveled Avocado Toast from my cookbook Healthy Gut Happy You, which is currently available on Amazon https://a.co/d/1jVPHRJ.

First, gather your ingredients. (I know the recipe calls for flax, but I ran out.) I chose not to use an egg, as I am allergic, but if you enjoy them, they're a fantastic source of protein!
Scoop your avocado into a bowl
Add your sesame seeds, nutritional yeast, and flax.
Add your mayonnaise (I used Not Mayo, because of my egg allergy, but any brand you prefer is fine).
Mix well, adding salt and pepper if desired.
Scoop onto your multigrain toast, and enjoy!

I like to try different flavour combos, some I've really enjoyed were sriracha, ground sunflower and pumpkin seeds, or Everything bagel spice. This breakfast is a delicious way to get healthy fats and proteins into your diet, and will help you feel fuller longer!

For me, the best part of summer isn't the sun (ask me about my current sunburn), or the heat (could we just NOT?!) For me, the best part of summer is heading to my local farmers market on Saturday morning and filling my basket with delicious fresh fruits and veggies, just picked from the tree or vine. There's nothing sweeter or more delicious than a just-picked peach or fresh garden peas. MMMmmmmmmmm!

Here are 5 delicious summer foods that are in season now, which will make both you and your tummy smile!

1. Leafy Greens - These foods are not just an excellent source of fibre, but they are a great source of gut-healing nutrients! Think spinach, kale, arugula, and chard.

2. Berries - A fantastic source of antioxidants and can help to reduce inflammation and support gut health. Look for blueberries, saskatoons, cherries, and raspberries

3. Tomatoes - Loaded with Lycopene, Vit A and C, your microbiome will dance for joy! Try them with some cucumber, feta and oregano in a delicious Greek salad!

4. Beets - Another rich source of fibre and prebiotics, these earthy flavoured red jewels pair deliciously with a tangy feta or goat cheese.

5. Mushrooms - Is there anything these beauties Can't do?! From helping you focus to supporting your immune and gut health, make friends with mycelium! Your microbiome will thank you.

Here are 9 fun and interesting things you didn't know about me!

1. An ice cream cone changed my life. When I was 21, I contracted Campylobacter from contaminated ice cream. This infection resulted in my being hospitalized and almost dying!

2. I have 39 different allergies! Yup, 39! I am allergic to foods I have never tried before, and some I’ve actually never seen hahaha!!

3. At age 45, I made a huge (and terrifying!) life change and went back to school at the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition to become a Holistic Nutritional Consultant. I graduated with Distinction in 2022 and opened and began my business, Sacred Souls Holistic Health.

4. I am a published author! I have released 3 books: My Spoonie Diary - A Fibromyalgia Symptom Tracker; Fu***ng Mindfulness - A Profanity Laced Mindfulness Journal; and Healthy Gut, Happy You - A Gut Health cookbook. 5. 2 years ago, I married the most wonderful man ever, and we began our life together. I have 1 stepson who’s a Graphic Artist and Game Designer! We are proudly owned by 3 cats: Rosie, Gus, and Sophia

6. 2 years ago, at the age of 46, I took up dance! I started dancing with a size-inclusive dance company and have performed live on stage 3 times! It’s been terrifying and exhilarating and all the feels in between.

Who am I, and why am I here?!

I have always had a strong interest in Holistic Medicine, Spirituality, and the concept of 'Food as Medicine'. I enjoyed reading and learning, but only put some of this into practice - onions for a cold, ginger for an upset stomach, garlic for vampires, that sort of thing.

Then a life-threatening foodborne infection changed everything. At 21, I contracted Campylobacter and almost died of renal failure! This triggered a whole host of autoimmune conditions – Osteoarthritis, Fibromyalgia, Sjogren's syndrome, and a multitude of allergies and sensitivities – 39 to be exact! I was given a host of prescriptions and wished good luck.

While I am so grateful for the education I received from the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition, I was furious that my doctors had never told me how much nutrition could affect my life. I always thought I just got the short end of the stick, and this was my lot in life. When I realize that my health and body did not need to deteriorate to the point it has if I had received proper nutritional advice, I want to cry and rage scream!

That’s why I do what I do, because I don’t want anyone else to discover 20 years later that “it didn’t have to get to this point.”
