PLAY THERAPY for ANXIETY

Did you know?
Play therapy helps children feel safe enough to face what worries them.

Anxiety can be hard for children to explain—but through play, they can show us what they’re feeling without needing the right words.

Using activities like storytelling, role-play, and creative expression, children begin to:
• understand their worries
• feel more in control
• practice coping in manageable ways

Play therapy creates a space where children can gently approach fears, build confidence, and develop real tools for calming their minds and bodies.

Because when a child feels safe, they can begin to feel brave. 💛

Child Depression CHILD DEPRESSION: Understanding the Growing Challenge

In 2000, children didn’t face the same levels of depression that we see today. 😞 A recent meta-analysis (2022, Wang et al.) revealed that the risk of anxiety and depression among children and adolescents significantly increased during the pandemic. The prevalence of these conditions is now estimated at nearly 9% in 2023, up from just 3.5% in 2019. This means over half a million (569,374) children and youth in Canada, ages 5 to 19, may need mental healthcare to address anxiety and depression. 📅 Factors such as excessive screen time 🖥️, cyberbullying 💻, social isolation, and the pressures from social media and smartphones have made the landscape even more challenging for today’s children.

Parent awareness of these mental health challenges is essential in ensuring children get the support they need.

Mindful Movements: Enhancing Children's Mental Health with Yoga

👣 Tiny Steps Toward Mental Strength

You don’t need a 45-minute class or matching mats.

🧘 Just a few minutes of movement and mindful breathing each day can improve focus, reduce reactivity, and build emotional strength.

Family yoga time can be silly and imperfect — that’s the magic.

When kids feel safe to move, fall, and breathe beside you, they grow from the inside out.

📚 Children’s Books as Tools for Emotional Growth

Think of bibliotherapy as emotional coaching 💬—disguised as storytime 🌟.

In child therapy, books help children recognize emotions 🧠, problem-solve 🛠, and discover new ways to cope with everyday struggles 🚧.
They build vocabulary for big feelings 🗣, and open the door 🚪 to conversations that might otherwise feel too hard to have.

📖 Books promote emotional literacy 🧠.

🧡 Stories strengthen empathy 🤗.

🛠 And with the right book, a child gains a powerful tool for growth 🌱.

👨👩👧📖💬 Books give families a gentle way to talk about feelings, friendships, worries, and hopes—creating connection and building trust. Sharing stories can strengthen your bond and help children open up about things they might not say otherwise. Try The Invisible Boy by Trudy Ludwig.

PLAY THERAPY EDMONTON | CHILD THERAPY FOR KIDS EMOTIONS

Why play therapy?
Because children don’t always have the words for what they feel—but they do have play. 🧸

Confidence grows from connection 🌱, not perfection. Try using phrases like, “You worked hard on that!” instead of focusing on outcomes 🏅. If your child often avoids challenges or puts themselves down, a child psychologist can help you, offering tools and insights to help your child build self-confidence. 🧠🧡

Often, when parents notice changes in their child’s social, emotional, or behavioral development, they’ll reach out first to their family doctor or pediatrician. Dr. Johnson, a child psychologist, offers some suggestions based on her experiences to help you prepare for that appointment and advocate effectively for your child:

📚 Mention developmental or family history that may be relevant. Note any early delays (speech, motor skills) or mental health concerns in the family. This context helps your physician decide if a child psychologist referral is needed.

🔐 Ask the receptionist or doctor to set aside family and adults only time so your child does not feel uncomfortable when you are sharing your observations and concerns.

Did you know?
Laughter is one of the fastest ways to connect with your child.
A shared giggle sends a powerful message: “We’re safe. We’re close. We belong together.”

Today, pause the rush. Be a little silly. Let them see your playful side.
Because the moments they laugh with you are the ones that build lasting emotional security.
