Spending time outdoors in the sunshine is one of the best parts of summer, especially being in Canada where we face long winters! However, it’s important to make sure you are being safe in the heat and sun. Here are some key tips to support your skin and overall wellness while enjoying those sunny days:

• Hydrate: Sweating during outdoor activities means you're losing not just water, but essential minerals like sodium, potassium, and magnesium. Add electrolytes to your water if you’re exercising, sweating heavily, or out in the sun for extended periods.
• Wear a wide-brimmed hat: A breathable, wide-brimmed hat helps protect your face, neck, and scalp which are areas that are especially prone to sun exposure.
• Seek shade during peak UV hours: Try to limit direct sun exposure between 10am and 4pm, when UV rays are at their strongest. Find or create shade when possible, especially for little ones or those with sensitive skin.
• Choose mineral sunscreen: Broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are great options. These ingredients sit on the skin’s surface and reflect UV rays, acting as a physical barrier, making them a great choice if you’re prone to irritation or have sensitive skin.

Summer is a time to feel energized, not drained. Protecting your skin and staying well-hydrated helps you feel your best while enjoying all that the season has to offer.

Last, but most certainly not least, as we finish up celebrating 5 years of Flow, we have to celebrate the incredible woman behind it all, our amazing clinic owner, Dr. Briana Botsford. Her compassion, strength, and leadership have shaped not only this clinic but each one of us on the team. We are so proud to stand beside her and endlessly grateful for her vision. She has created a space where people feel truly seen and supported in their health journeys. Flow wouldn’t exist without her, and neither would this amazing community she’s built. Here’s to five years of impact and many more to come.

I’m so grateful for Alicia, who joined our front desk team when I was on maternity leave in 2021. She had JUST graduated high school and now she’s nearly finished her undergraduate degree in Immunology. Balancing work and school is no joke and we’re grateful for all you do for our team.

Thank you Alicia!!

Next, we’re celebrating Nicole, our Director of Operations, who joined Flow a few months after we opened and quickly became my wing-woman in running the clinic. She carries a tremendous load behind the scenes and does it all with empathy, care, and a steadfast commitment to putting clients first. Everyone knows Nicole, many of our clients have spoken with her, or at the very least, felt her impact through the smooth, compassionate experience she helps create. She may be leading operations now, but she’ll always be a Patient Care Coordinator at heart. I’m endlessly grateful for her loyalty, insight, and partnership.

Thank you Nicole!!

Perimenopause & the Luteal Phase: What’s Going On?!

If you’re in your 30s or 40s and noticing your PMS is dialed up lately - think mood swings, breast tenderness, fatigue, anxiety, or disrupted sleep - you might be experiencing luteal phase symptoms linked to perimenopause.

What’s happening?
During the luteal phase (the 2nd half of your cycle), your body relies on steady progesterone. But in perimenopause, ovulation becomes less consistent, meaning progesterone drops — and symptoms spike.

Common symptoms:
• Irritability or rage
• Anxiety or low mood
• Breast tenderness
• Bloating
• Poor sleep
• Fatigue or brain fog

Supportive Treatments:
• Magnesium + B6 – calm the nervous system
• Adaptogens (like ashwagandha or rhodiola) – help with stress regulation
• Regular sleep & blood sugar balance – game-changers
• Bioidentical progesterone (talk to your NP!) – sometimes helpful for severe symptoms

You’re not going crazy - your hormones are shifting and we can help!

Book in with Michelle Jeannotte, NP, for a BHRT consultation today to determine if hormone replacement therapy will be a good fit for you.

Perimenopause & Movement – The Underrated Benefits!

Yes, exercise helps with bone health, metabolism, and weight, but what about the benefits you might not think of:
• Better sleep – Say goodbye to tossing and turning!
• Less intense hot flashes – Movement can help regulate temperature changes.
• Sharper mind – Exercise supports memory, focus, and cognition.
• Improved mood – Reduce stress and hormonal mood swings.
• Better balance & stability – Stay strong, prevent falls, and feel confident in your body.

Where to start? Any movement is better than none! Walk, dance, do yoga, or lift weights: the key is consistency.
What’s your favorite way to move your body? Feel free to share with us in the comments!

You’ve probably heard a LOT about intermittent fasting but with all the noise online, people are left with loads of questions about it. Let’s break it down to determine if it’s right for you:

PROS:
✔ Simple structure - no calorie counting
✔ May help to reduce caloric intake
✔ Can improve some metabolic markers (glucose metabolism, triglycerides, inflammation)
✔ Some people report better focus & energy
BUT… and yes, there is a BIG BUT…

CONS:
⚠️ Hard to sustain - social events & routines often don’t fit into this time
⚠️ Overeating - long fasts can lead to binges which leads to more calories
⚠️ Nutritional gaps - less time = fewer nutrients (fiber, protein, iron, vitamins)
⚠️ Benefits are transient - as soon as you stop intermittent fasting, benefits are lost
⚠️ Slower metabolism - risk of losing muscle mass if not paired with adequate protein and exercise
⚠️ Not for everyone - avoid if pregnant, diabetic, or history of disordered eating
⚠️ Evidence is ONLY preliminary - there is only some observational human data and animal studies

Bottom Line:
It may help short-term, but it’s certainly not a magic fix, instead we prefer to focus on balanced and sustainable habits.
