These results may surprise you… I know I was, & to be honest slightly disappointed. As an avid crossfitter I would have liked to think all this working out would’ve put me ahead of the curve in regards to my pelvic floor function.

BUT this study showed having a high fitness level or being an athlete does NOT leave you in the clear for pelvic floor rehabilitation.

This is a reminder that, active or not, ALL women need dedicated programming to support their pelvic floor.

What are these scary looking tools?! 🤯
A: IASTM

✨What is IASTM or ‘Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization”?
“a skilled intervention that includes the use of specialized tools to manipulate the skin, myofascia, muscles, and tendons by various direct compressive stroke techniques”

✨How does it work?
~ The tool effectively breaks down fascial restrictions and scar tissue in tight or restricted muscles, I use one of these tools when I can’t breakup adhesions using just my hands & fingers
~ Each tool is specially designed for different muscles & different parts of the body; the special designs allow me to locate restrictions and treat the affected area with the appropriate amount of pressure
~ This technique creates microtrauma causing an inflammatory response to the area; this response initiates remodelling of the affected structures (muscles, fascia, scar tissue, etc)

These adhesions may be a result of surgery, immobilization, repeated strain or other mechanisms that causes soft tissue to be broken down that has healed inappropriately

✨What conditions can benefit from IASTM?
* Medial Epicondylitis, Lateral Epicondylitis
* Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
* Neck Pain
* Plantar Fasciitis
* Rotator cuff tendinitis
* Patellar Tendinitis
* Tibialis Posterior Tendinitis
* Heel Pain /Achilles Tendinitis
* DeQuervain’s syndrome
* Post-Surgical and Traumatic Scars
* Myofascial Pain and Restrictions
* Musculoskeletal Imbalances
* Chronic Joint Swelling Associated with Sprains/Strains
* Ligament Sprains
* Muscle Strains
* Non-Acute Bursitis
* Back Pain
* Trigger Finger
* Hip Pain (Replacements)
* IT Band Syndrome
* Shin Splints
* Chronic Ankle Sprains

✨What is Functional Dry Needling (FDN)?/Functional Acupuncture?
Dry needling is a form of acupuncture that uses thin stainless steel needles to reach deep into muscles to release knots, tightness and tension, with the goal of decreasing pain, increasing range of motion & improving function

✨How does it work?
The insert of the needle into a trigger point or tight band of a muscle will create micro trauma to the area that promotes blood flow & healing

✨Benefits of FDN?
1. increases blood flow to the tissues
2. promotes healing (initiates immune response)
3. influences the chemical balance of chronically tight muscles getting them to relax
4. decreased inflammation
5. natural pain reliever (resets the pain cycle)
6. natural sense of relaxation (endorphin release)

✨Who can benefit from it?
- chronic pain
- low back pain
- “sciatica” symptoms
- neck pain
- chronic headaches or migraines
- shoulder pain
- plantar fasciitis
- elbow tendinitis
- carpal tunnel
- osteoarthritis
- PFPS (patellofemoral pain syndrom)
- IT band syndrome
- etc

✨Does it hurt?
The needles used are very thin & flexible (same thickness as a strand of hair!), most of the time the needles are completely painless; in certain areas of really tight muscles you may feel a deep achy cramp but for the most part patients don’t feel anything

💥BONUS: if the condition needs it; I also provide IMS through the needles
IMS- Intermuscular stimulation ; attaching the needles to electrodes & pulsating the muscles gives an added benefit of muscle relaxation with no extra pain or discomfort

How is your ☁️Sleep Hygiene☁️

📱did you know you shouldn’t have ANY electronics 30min before bed??
☕️what about no caffeine products 6hrs before bed??

Sleep is such an important part of overall health and well being, it is often one of the first things I address with my patients

🛏 With the all the increased time at home during the pandemic the bed has turned into a work station, relax station, etc, which can be affecting your ability to fall asleep at the end of the day. Try using your bed ONLY for sleeping

How many of these things are you doing?

Life is all about 🌿 b a l a n c e 🌿

Anyone that knows me, knows that I don’t “diet”.
I do, however, try to make healthy lifestyle choices throughout the day:

🥗 My meals typically involve 50% veggies, 25% protein & 25% carbs

🏋🏼‍♀️ I also try & be as active as I can (although Covid has made finding the motivation challenging)

& again, anyone that knows me, knows that that I never turn down a treat 😍 or pass up the chance to try some new dessert. I love finding new bakeries & new recipes to bake! 🧁 🎂

It’s through making a conscious effort of making healthy lifestyle choices that I can have a guilt free treat.
Having a healthy relationship with food is so important for mental & physical health. 🧘🏼‍♀️

That being said, a huge thank you to .date & .yeg for the chance to try out a new bakery!!

If anyone has any questions about making lifestyle changes or nutrition feel free to message me!

✨ Pregnancy and Taping

Part of chiropractic care involves “kin taping”, this form of treatment is especially beneficial for those “momma to be’s” who struggle with
❌low back and pelvic girdle pain
❌round ligament pain (that quick jabbing pain felt in the lower abdomen or groin area – ouch!)
❌swollen feet
❌sciatica
❌carpal tunnel
and other aches and pains

💥Taping helps alleviate the pain by redistributing the weight of a growing belly, or reinforcing a more upright posture as your body changes 🤰🏼
💥Different taping techniques can also reduce swelling (as seen on the feet), improve proper blood flow, and provide stability to an area

📚Many different studies have spoken to the benefit of taping in pregnant population by “demonstrating a significant decrease in low-back pain’, ‘reduction in pain related to pelvic girdle pain (PGP)”, etc.

Disclaimer*though there is not a lot of studies to this population, the research we have is promising. Speak to a healthcare professional if taping could be beneficial to you!

✨Mobility Monday Challenge✨
This one is killer for the hips!
Thanks for the challenge!
Another definition of mobility as it requires flexibility & muscular control of the hip musculature

This works on internal rotation, external rotation, coordination, & core control

Mobility is not just about flexibility, but how you use that mobility in a controlled manner, allowing you to move freely & easily through movements

This exercise with test your:
💥Hip Mobility
💥Ankle Mobility
💥Thoracic Spine Mobility

Start in butterfly position, sitting up nice & tall
Bring one foot behind you while bringing the knee down
Stand up on your knees, shift your feet to the other side
Sit back down, & rotate your other foot around you
Ending in the same position you started
Then repeat it all the way back!

Focus on:
> sloowww & controlled movement
> keeping your torso as up right as you can

Give this a try! Film it, Post it, Tag me!

✨What’s your New Years resolution?? 🥂

I don’t know about you but I’ve found myself REALLY craving sweets lately 🍬... like I’m upset if I can’t find something sweet to nibble on at the end of the night

I’ve decided to listen to my body & the craving I need for excess sweetness isn’t good, so I’m going to go on a detox from refined sugars for the time being

What that means is that I’m going to avoid anything with added sugars completely, & reduce my intake of natural sugars like honey, fruits, etc (at least for the next couple months)

I’m going to look for creative ways to satisfy my taste for sweets while still maintaining a healthy diet
If you have any go-to recipes drop a comment!
Im curious, what are you doing to better yourself in the new year?...

Pregnancy Series💥
💪🏼Evidence exists that women who exercise during pregnancy have more energy, fewer mood swings, are able to manage stress more effectively, and achieve more restful sleep compared with sedentary pregnant women.

🤰🏼Women who exercise gain 21% less weight throughout gestation; enjoy shorter, easier labors (decreased by an average of 2 hours); experience fewer medical interventions (24% fewer cesarean deliveries and 14% reduction in use of forceps); experience less fetal distress; and enjoy a faster recovery
👩🏼‍⚕️With our training, chiropractors can also help the pregnant patient manage an exercise routine compatible for her changing body throughout pregnancy.

🤱🏼Maternal Benefits: Increased maternal aerobic fitness, Control body fat/wt gain, Prepare for childbirth (inc. Kegels), Prevention of pregnancy-related issues such as GDM, fatigue, etc., Improved circulation, Improved posture, muscular balance, core strength, Increased postpartum recovery, Psychological benefits/self image

👶🏼Fetal Benefits: Fetal heart rate response, Reduced fetal stress during labour

2019 Guidelines for Physical Activity through Pregnancy
6 Recommendations:
1. All women without contraindications should engage in physical activity during pregnancy
2. Accumulate at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity to achieve meaningful health benefits and reductions in pregnancy complications
3. Should be accumulated over a minimum of 3 days/week; however, being active every day is encouraged
4. Incorporate a variety or aerobic and resistance training activities to achieve greater benefits. Yoga and/or gentle stretching may also be beneficial
5. Pelvic floor muscle training (i.e. Kegel exercises) may be performed on a daily basis to reduce the risk of urinary incontinence. Instruction on proper technique is recommended
6. Lying on their back should be avoided if dizziness, nausea or a feeling of unwell occurs. Perhaps modify your position

✨Mobility Monday Challenge✨
~Shoe Challenge~
Throwback to the challenge I absolutely LOVED ft. a gym I also loved & I’m sad to see gone 😢

Mobility is not just about flexibility, but how you use that mobility in a controlled manner, allowing you to move freely & easily through movements
This exercise with test your:
💥Lumbar Spine Mobility
💥Hip Mobility
💥Knee Mobility
💥Ankle Mobility

Place your shoe on the bottom of your foot, complete 1 full rotation. Without dropping or grabbing the shoe.
This exercise really challenges your muscular control AND flexibility of ALL the muscles that attach to your hip; this is the definition of a mobility challenge
This was probably my 10th attempt at it so as you can see, I was very relieved when I FINALLY got it... & you do not want to see me attempt it with the other leg 😬🙈
Focus on:
> sloowww & controlled movement
> keeping your foot flexed & as horizontal as possible

Give this a try! Film it, Post it, Tag me!

Pregnancy series: Low Back Pain Causes & ➡️ How to Help ✨Structural adaptation- the increase in circulating progesteron...
12/16/2020

Pregnancy series:
Low Back Pain Causes &
➡️ How to Help

✨Structural adaptation- the increase in circulating progesterone, estrogen, and relaxin throughout gestation, especially in the third trimester, brings about pelvic hypermobility and creates a decrease in spinal stabilization.

✨Spinal Dysfunction related to changing load distributions- the displaced weight gain of 25 to 35 lb greatly increases the stress to the sacroiliac joints. weight is projected forward and the lumbar lordosis is increased, placing extra stress on the intervertebral disks and facet joints.

✨Traction, pressure or stretch of the pelvic structures refer and secondary muscle spasm- Direct pressure of the fetus on the lumbosacral nerve roots may also be a cause of pain

💥Physically strenuous work and previous low back pain are factors that may also be associated with an increased risk of developing low back pain and sacroiliac dysfunction during pregnancy

🤰🏼As the growing uterus expands, it pulls the sacral base anterior, causing an anterior tilt of the pelvis and flexion of the hips, adding additional pressure on the Sacroiliac joints.
This orientation of the pelvis causes an increase in the lumbar lordosis, which increases the activity of the iliopsoas muscles. The piriformis muscle remains in a contracted state to maintain the external rotation of the legs, which compensates for a lack of balance as the center of gravity shifts as the pregnancy progresses.

TREATMENT 👩🏼‍⚕️👐🏼
- gentle myofascial relaxation of the piriformis and iliopsoas can greatly aide in the reduction of pain and tension. Chiropractic adjustments to the sacroiliac joints and lumbar spine can help restore normal function to those joints. Also, improving the strength of the transversus abdominus muscle is thought to prevent some of the typical postural alterations that are seen in the third trimester that come with anterior pelvic tilt.

12/09/2020

Did you know:
~50% of all pregnant women experience low back pain during their pregnancy
~20% experience Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP)
~50%-75% of women experience back pain during labor… AND
~18.8% of those women still have their low back pain 6 months postpartum?

However, only 21% of pregnant women with back pain are seeking consultation with their health professionals??

‼️1/3 of women state that this is their first episode of Low Back Pain (Which usually starts around the 18th-28th week of pregnancy) this could be due to structural adaptation, hormone changes, changing load distributions on the spine, or traction/pressure/stretch of the pelvic structures and secondary muscle spasm.

But don’t worry; there’s something we can do!

✨75% of pregnant patients who received chiropractic care during their pregnancies stated that they found relief from pain!
✨Chiropractic manipulation may significantly decrease the incidence of “back labor.” As the relative risk of experiencing back labor was almost 3 times greater if back pain was experienced during the pregnancy.
✨ A retrospective review of statistics reported that 1st time pregnant women pregnant with their 1st child who seek chiropractic care throughout pregnancy have, on average, a 25% shorter labor time, and women who are on their 2nd, 3rd, 4th pregnancy and seek chiropractic care throughout their pregnancy have, on average, 31% shorter labor times.

Borggren CL. Pregnancy and chiropractic: a narrative review of the literature. Journal of chiropractic medicine. 2007 Jun 1;6(2):70-4.
