Parents often worry about giving their children information that they are not old enough to process. The bottom line is – if they are hearing about it from their peers, it needs to be addressed.

Staying open and honest in these discussions will mean your child will learn to make healthy and responsible decisions without your direct guidance. This is a foundational part of becoming an "askable" parent.

As a parent of a child under five, every day is an exciting challenge full of surprises.

That's why we have a parenting class - to take some of the guesswork out of parenting.

Some skills you'll learn in this workshop are:
- What to expect as your child develops
- Your parenting style and how it affects your child
- Why children behave the way they do
- How to positively guide behaviours
- What bonding is and why it’s important

The next class is split in two evening sessions on November 10 and 12.

Kids love questioning everything.

What happens when you don't know the answer?

Be honest and tell them that you can’t give them an answer right away. Then, promise to revisit the issue when you have better information.

Always follow up soon after. This tells your child that their concerns are important to you, and that you remember the things they say. This connection and trust is so important!

Let’s be honest: some topics are embarrassing.

It’s ok to acknowledge this to your child while reinforcing that they can come to you with any question or problem - especially if it’s something they find to be personally embarrassing.

This is a key step in becoming an "askable" parent. Learn more on our blog: https://tfcna.com/47eJYvE

When Erin regained custody of her children after four years apart, she struggled with becoming a full-time mom again. When she enrolled her daughter at John A. McDougall School, she met Hermila, the school’s Roots & Wings worker.

Through Hermila, Erin was connected with resources and Indigenous supports, like sweats. She was then introduced to the school's Mental Health Therapist, Meena.

At first, Erin was hesitant. “I wasn't sure she was going to understand a lot of things if I were to be really honest with her." But she could tell that Meena genuinely cared for her well-being.

“Meena’s an amazing person. She’s such a caring lady. I just felt like I could trust her.”

Not sure if our therapy group on healthy relationships is for you?

One participant felt the same: "I was a little hesitant at first as I wasn’t sure if I belonged in this group. However, the facilitator and the women in the group either challenged or validated my thinking, and I kept coming back each week."

This is a 16-week program that covers conflict management, communication skills, personal values, power in relationships, and more.

"The atmosphere in the group was welcoming, always positive, and non-judgmental. The women in the group had very diverse backgrounds but were so supportive of each other... I feel this group has been beneficial not only to my relationship with my spouse but also with my kids, family, coworkers, and managers."
