Waniska Maskwa Community! OPEN TRADE DAY!! I have some oregano oil available for trade. Oregano oil is one of my first go to helpers as soon as I start to feel sick. I take a full dropper full 3 times a day when I’m coming down with something and combined with rest and good food it’s usually enough to send those nasty germs âwâs🐻🤎. Currently I’m working on a new batch for the upcoming winter season 🍃💚

Working with Red Willow this morning. I am making a personal identity shield and of course when given options for materials my mind always goes to the land and our plant relative’s to help support my creative process. We were given metal hoops to work with and all I heard was Willow calling me to be the foundation for my hoop. Harvesting the right branch was only the first step. Now I am taking off the outer red bark to become a powerful tea for pain. Ever heard of the drug Aspirin?? Well it comes from the Salicylic acid found in the inner bark of willow trees. So natural pain reliever. I’ve been told that a long time ago we would give babies who were teething small peeled willow branches to gum and it would numb their gums and provide big relief. I’ve also heard we made natural paint brushes from willow and so many other applications. Once I am done the outer red bark I will be peeling that inner green bark for Kinninkik and pipe to***co to gift. So many ways one branch will help support and heal not just myself but community. The generosity and kindness that is our plants just amazes me. We could all learn so much just being in their presence. Miyo Pimatsowin. 🤎🐻

I not only adore our plant relatives that reside outside but I also have about 100 plants inside my home thriving. My fave tropical are philodendrons. I just love the lush leaves and how big they can get plus they are super chill and don’t mind my adhd neglect when I forget to water. Plants take care of me and teach me so many amazing things and even though I’m guilty of allowing life to get in the way and sometimes neglect them, They don’t change just because I’m in a bad mood or don’t have time for them. Nope the plants still show up everytime and I am so grateful for their medicine.

Aero loved to lay in the living room that way he could see me no matter where I was downstairs and he didn’t have to move lol. This plant also lives in the living room. So I was walking around my homefire aimlessly the day after Aero left his earth walk, I was just lost and in a fog of grief when my plant snagged my attention. This is a Philodendron “Moonlight” variety. This plant is about 3 years old and HUGE lol. Well I walked over to it and noticed something peeking out under the leaves and naturally I’m a plant creeper and always lift up their leaves to take a closer peek lolol and this is what I saw. The day my best friend passed my plant has gifted me a flower. Well even in my grief I started rolling with laughter……. I used to have to crop so many pictures of my dog because he always had his “ lipstick” hanging out and my damn plant also has its “lipstick” out in full force. Thank you my boy for letting me know you are still around and thank you to the plants for helping me to remember laughter is the best medicine 🥰😂😂😂

A mountain ash teaching was shared with me a few years ago and when I moved into my home and realized I had one of these relatives in my yard I started observing the tree and offered to***co to build a relationship with it. So far in the last three years the teaching has proven to be true. I was taught that when a mountain ash has loads of berries that we will be in for a long hard winter. This year my tree is covered in bright red berries so I will be preparing for this winter like it’s teaching me. I am storing food, supplies and working on my story in a good way. Winters can be long and hard but being prepared helps them to also be gentle and restful.

Good Morning Maskwa Medicine Community!!

Gosh it’s been awhile since I’ve posted and I just wanted to say thank you and I’m so incredibly grateful for your patience. Life has been hard in my homefire. So many challenges to my Wellness. However grief is the hardest challenge by far. I had no idea how close I was to loosing myself when I recently lost my best friend. I had no idea about unconditional love before he chose to walk beside me. He wasn’t even a year old the first time he stepped in between me and my abuser and saved my life, he did that more than once keeping me safe until I was able to save us both and get free. He had faith in me that I would eventually figure it out and make sure we were both ok. Now my job is to figure out this new normal and live the amazing teachings my boy gifted me. The knowledge that I am worthy of kindness and compassion. I deserve love and I am enough 🤎🖤. Yes my boy was a 9 year old Rottweiler but what I’ve come to understand about relationships is they are very personal and the body that contains the spirit of that love is just that a body and the spirit was the force of that body and Awemee did my boy have the spirit of a warrior .

I made a promise to my boy before I let him go that I would be ok, And this is how I do it. By remembering who I am and the things I am capable of. So today when I’m in my garage and go to my fridge I have a couple of choices when I open the door. I could reach in and grab that beer or I can choose a different way.

Instead I choose to grab the Bear fat I need to prepare for medicine and trade. I choose to heal myself and my homefire. I will not stay stuck in the big sad. I will work to remember the joy and remind myself that I am capable of amazing things and that life is about balance. There will be more hard times and there will be many more great times as long as I remember the teachings and continue to live in a good way I’ll keep that promise I made. I will be OK. Thank you Aero you will always be my best boy, I love you so much Nitotem🤎🐻

I am super pleased with how the grease turned out. So clean. This Maskwa also came with many teachings and I don’t normally associate patience teachings with Maskwa but wow did this one teach me to slowdown lol. 🐻🤎

Waniskâ Maskwa Community🐻. I was out walking my besties this morning in the field and noticed the crazy amount of Foxtails that have shot out in the heat. Please don’t let your fur babies eat these. Foxtails have small barbs on the end of their bristles and these will get caught in their throats and lungs and require vet care if the distress is recognized in time but can lead to their passing away very quickly🤎🐻

Join Maskwa Medicine as we celebrate at Ministik🤎🐻

Did you know there is a fabulous picnic spot and playground on Highway 14 at the location of the old Ministik School, called Ministik Memorial Park, with a weekly Bookmobile stop on Tuesdays? “Ministik ‘’ is Cree for “Island” and the park is within the Beaver Hills Biosphere, the traditional lands of many Indigenous Peoples. We will share in Indigenous culture with an Indigenous Knowledge Keeper. Visit with Glen Lawrence, Strathcona County Ward 7 Councillor, and enjoy a BBQ!
