🌿 Honoring the incredible indigenous elders on this National Day for Truth and Reconcilliation. Their wisdom, resilience, and deep connection to our culture inspire us to keep learning about our roots and continue to teach others of the rich history.

This day has given me time to reflect on my Mi’kmaq heritage and what I can do as an indigenous business owner to help educate our community on the diversity and strength of indigenous cultures.

What is childhood apraxia of speech🤨 Childhood apraxia of speech is a speech sound disorder in which children struggle to produce proper sounds💭

The motor planning needed for speech including tongue, lips, and jaw 👄 gets jumbled in the kiddos brain before production!

The more a child with apraxia thinks about the word they are going to say, the more difficult it can get🌪️

February 29 is Rare Disease Day!Rare Disease Day raises awareness and creates change for people and their families living with a rare disease❤️

Often times, there are no existing cures for a rare disease. It is important to spread awareness so people living with chronic pain no longer have to suffer🚫

There is a need for educated health care providers to help those struggling and to lessen the financial burden that falls upon them and their caregivers.

Have you heard your SLP mention the cycles approach for phonological intervention ⁉️The cycles approach is suppose to improve intelligibility quickly among children with high unintelligibility!

When therapist treat a phonological process, they are aiding in correcting the errors in your child’s speech pattern🗣️

When your child has a lot of phonological errors, the cycles approach is used by working on one specific error and then “cycling” through to the next!

The cycle will continue until each process is intelligible in your child’s speech ❤️

Let’s talk 🗣️ SSD It is a widely 🌏 used term that you have probably heard 👂 but have never defined!

Children with speech sound disorders and speech sound delays have notable differences in their speech sound acquisition 💭

In the therapy world, SSD is a broad term used to encompass both speech sounds disorders and speech sound delays 🧩

We are here to explain to you the difference!

A speech sound delay is a speech sound error that is seen typically in speech development and is delayed relative to 90% of that age group!

A common speech sound delay error is the word ‘kite’ becoming ‘tite’ in pronunciation🪁

When a speech sound error is not typical in development for their age group, it is a speech sound disorder!

A speech sound disordered error is ‘taco’ becoming ‘kaco’ in pronunciation 🌮

No matter what the definition, we are here to help your child and your family 🫶

Speech therapy (or any therapy) can be a hard topic to approach with your child, no matter what age! We think it is important to always start by discussing with your child how do THEY feel about their speech? 💭

This topic can vary depending on their age, the younger kiddos are excited to come and “play”!🥳

The older your child, the more they might resist. That is why we recommend talking it through with them❤️

Let them know that you support them🫶 you are here for them. You want to make the hard things easier, and so do we!

Be upfront with your child, or any loved one, why they are coming to therapy! There is no shame in the therapy game 🤗🤗

It can be hard to hear the term “non-speaking” from a therapist or to read it in a report. We want to remind you that non-speaking is not a bad term ❤️All communication is communication🗣️

Communication does not 🟰 verbal only

Non-speaking does not diminish anything about your child🫶

Sometimes 🧐 your speech therapist, doctor, or a teacher may use terms that you are not familiar with! Sometimes, we get ahead of ourselves and forget to explain along the way ➡️➡️

Have you heard a professional in your life talking about joint attention❓

Typically joint attention is developed prior to language! If your child is paying attention to the same thing as you at the same time… they have developed joint attention!! 🤗

If your child points to an object or shares with you what they are seeing… they have developed joint attention!

Or simply, if your child looks at the object you are showing them… they have developed joint attention🙂

An easy and fun way to see if your child has developed joint attention is to build anticipation and see if your child will look at you for continuity! Try ready, set….. GO! Does your child look at you to say GO?
