Health Trends - 2023
While most Canadians still say they would prefer to initially reach a doctor in person, the pandemic saw virtual appointments increasing. A recent poll by the CMA shows 47 % of Canadians had an online appointment last year as compared to 4% pre-pandemic. As we go forward, it is expected that younger, healthier people will choose to go the virtual route, while those who are older and more at risk will likely choose in person visits.

No matter your age, it’s important to take steps to maintain your health and take care of your body. Even taking simple steps to safeguard your health can help improve your immune system and reduce your chances of getting ill.
Health Tip #7 – Take steps to prevent infections
Getting annual vaccinations is another way to stay healthy throughout the year. If you’re age 65 and older, talk to your doctor about getting a high-dose or adjuvant flu vaccine.
Flu season is between October and May in Canada. It takes about two weeks for the vaccine to be effective. The flu shot protects against 3 or 4 different strains of the flu virus each season. The flu shot can still provide protection even when there's a less-than-ideal match between the vaccine and a circulating strain. This can result in lower effectiveness against one strain of the virus but will still protect you (Source: https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/flu-influenza/get-your-flu-shot.html).
The flu virus changes each year, so you should get the vaccine yearly. You can also talk to your doctor about getting pneumococcal vaccines to protect against pneumonia and meningitis.

Health Tip #6 – Get plenty of rest
Not only can sleep reduce your stress level, but sleep is how your body repairs itself. For this reason, getting an adequate amount of sleep can result in a stronger immune system, making it easier for your body to fight off viruses.
Sleep is also important as you get older because it can improve memory and concentration. Aim for at least seven and a half to nine hours of sleep per night.
If you have trouble sleeping, talk to your doctor to find the underlying cause. Causes of insomnia can include inactivity during the day and too much caffeine. Or it can be a sign of a medical condition like sleep apnea or restless leg syndrome.
