Hippotherapy comes from the Greek word Hippos (horse) and literally refers to treatment or therapy aided by a horse.

The concept originated in Ancient Greece, but hippotherapy as a formal discipline, began in the 1960’s in Germany, Austria and Switzerland as an addition to traditional physical therapy.

When you support your child in the sitting position, it helps them gain head control while seeing the world in an upright position. The lower your hands are for support on their body, the harder their core and back muscles have to work to maintain themselves.

1. Make sure your hands are positioned correctly on their torso:
2. Needing more support? Move your hands closer to under their arms.
3. Needing less support? Place your hands lower on their body or even on their hips.

Side-lying play is important for your child to learn about the sides of their body which will eventually support rolling and moving into sitting.

It furthermore helps to develop head and neck control as well as is the start to strengthening their tummy muscles.

1. Make sure your child’s shoulder and hip that are at the β€œtop” are slightly more forward than their β€œbottom” one.

2. This helps them to push off the floor with their foot, and leads to them learning to roll backward.

3. It will also assist them with rolling forward as gravity is already pulling the shoulder towards the floor.

Back play is important for your child when learning how to play in midline – bringing both hands together in front of them while playing with a toy, or playing with their feet using their hands.

1. Make sure their body is straight with their head in midline.

2. Uncross those legs and leave them free to kick and play.

3. Their shoulders should be curving forward to encourage their hands to come to midline for play.

Tummy time helps children develop important neck, back, and shoulder muscles in order to achieve early gross motor milestones.
It is also a wonderful change of position for them while playing on the floor.

1. Make sure their body is straight with their head in midline.
2. Place their hips and knees also straight in alignment with their body.
3. Have their elbows directly under their shoulders - use a small rolled up towel for support under their chest/armpits if necessary.

All young babies and children need certain positions for play to enhance their gross motor skills. By enhancing their basic skills, they are able to progress and reach new skills as they grow.

We will be looking at different play positions in the weeks to come and how to incorporate those into their playtime.

Early physiotherapy intervention can help a child who is struggling to master certain movement patterns. By learning and practicing these patterns early on, your child can form the basis for better gross motor function as they get older.

Early intervention physiotherapy can play a crucial role in helping families and caregivers identify and address their child's developmental needs as early as possible.

Physiotherapy can provide support and guidance to families, helping them to understand their child's strengths and areas where they may need extra help.

By working closely with families, the physiotherapist can also help parents and caregivers learn how to advocate for their child.

According to research, the earlier intervention is started, the better. The connections in a child's brain are most adaptable in the first 5 years of life. They form the foundation for learning, behaviour and health. Intervention is likely to be more effective when provided earlier than later in life.

Early Intervention (EI) can make all the difference in your child's development!
EI services and support like physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy can help minimize the impact of developmental delays or disabilities.
Did you know that Early Intervention can start as early as one day after birth? That means if you notice your child demonstrating limitations or an inability to perform normal age-appropriate motor skills like rotating their head, playing with their feet, rolling, or propping on forearms, it's never too early to seek help.
Let's give our little ones the best possible start in life with Early Intervention!

We are excited about serving you from our new location situated in the Edmonton Glenwood Sport and Spine clinic.

At NovaPath Pediatric Physio, our passion is to work with kiddos who have either been diagnosed or are showing signs of developmental delays. These include CP, developmental delay, TBI, Angelman's, and Down syndrome.

But we also want to connect with caregivers of babies 0-12 months, who feel that their LO is just not hitting their gross motor milestones as expected. Early Intervention (including tips on positioning and play) plays a fundamental role in decreasing the need for therapy later on.
