“We’ve spent years crafting this policy to make the city better, and now we just have a dead policy that nobody looks at. It’s shoved in the back of the closet as a ‘just in case’,” Weeks said.

The city has not taken sufficient action to enforce the accessibility policy council passed in 2019, nor has it educated Edmontonians about it enough, say two members of Edmonton's accessibility advisory committee.

Stopping for a team meeting at Tim Horton’s and we had some challenges accessing the space despite a ramp in place. The ramp getting up to the walk and the door was nearly impossible and posed serious challenges. While businesses may have good intentions, accessibility is only a reality when we build directly with the input of folks who need that accessibility. https://vimeo.com/711220721

Check out Radical Inclusion members on the Well Endowed Postcast from the Edmonton Community Foundation. The episode features important conversations on state induced poverty and inclusion in the community. Have a listen to Lisa Bennett and Roxanne Ulanicki here.

“Forced poverty” is a term regularly used in disability spaces. The cycle is difficult—if not impossible—to escape. It’s easy to understand why.

The endless extra costs of living with a disability, like having to pay out of pocket for essential medical supplies, are another one of the many reasons why our state of forced poverty continues."

On this episode, we find out about the Radical Inclusion Program created by John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights. In August of 2021, the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights released a report on the Status of Rights of People Living with Disability in Alberta. Our correspondent...

Is inclusion respected in Alberta? A Report on the Status of People living with Disabilities highlights the challenges and need for progress on disability rights in our Province.

Between 2020 and 2021, A team of thirteen people worked together to engage in a review of human rights in Alberta as it relates to the Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The majority of this team was made up of folks who experience visible and invisible disabilities personally. They worked diligently to develop and submit a formal report to the United Nations’ Committee on the Rights of Person with Disabilities highlighting the challenges and need for progress on disability rights. The report highlights five critical areas which need to be urgently addressed in relation to financial barriers, employment and careers, housing, healthcare, and access to justice.

“Our investigation found the hearing procedures to be administratively unfair, as there are no procedures in place for the hearings,” Ombudsman Marianne Ryan wrote in a letter obtained by Postmedia. “We also found there are no policies requiring the Appeals Secretariat to notify appellants they must ask in advance for a hearing to be recorded, nor for the Appeals Secretariat to ask in advance if appellants require any accommodations for a disability.
