This month is cataract awareness month! 👁️

A cataract refers to the clouding of the eye’s lens, which is normally clear and helps focus light to provide us with clear vision. Cataracts are often associated with aging (although can be a result of other factors like diabetes, UV exposure, smoking, or taking certain medications) and develop gradually, progressively impacting vision quality over time.

In addition to booking yearly routine eye exams with your optometrist, it is important to be familiar with the symptoms associated with cataracts. Common symptoms include blurred or hazy vision, dull or muted colours, double vision, yellow or brown tinting of vision, and increased glare/sensitivity from light sources (such as headlights, sunlight, or lamps).

If vision becomes significantly impacted by cataracts, surgery can be performed to restore the vision by removing and replacing the old lens with an artificial lens.

Every day, hundreds of Canadians suffer from an eye-related injury in the workplace. These injuries often result in vision loss or time away from work. It is important to always wear proper eye protection, such as CSA-certified safety glasses, whenever working with potential eye hazards. In fact, it is estimated that 90% of eye injuries are preventable if the proper eye protection is worn.

Some common workplace eye hazards include dust, chemicals, flying objects, and radiation. Look for safety lables/warnings and follow all operating instructions whenever using potentially hazardous materials or equipment. If you are unsure about what or where the potential eye hazards are in your workplace, speak with your supervisor or safety manager if available.

When children start showing signs of myopia, the severity will often progress as they age. While myopia cannot be reversed, there are ways that we can slow down its progression considerably. It is important to identify myopia as soon as possible, especially if you are considering myopia management.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a common eye disease that can result in blurred or distorted central vision. As we age, our maculas (the part of the eye that provides our central vision) can become damaged. The progression of AMD is often gradual and can go unnoticed in early stages. Those who smoke, are caucasian, have a family history of AMD, or are over the age of 55 are at a greater risk of developing AMD.

Some people with AMD will only experience mild changes to their vision while others can experience more severe loss of vision that affects their ability to drive, read, or recognize faces. AMD typically causes blurry or distorted central vision but leaves peripheral vision intact. Early detection is key to reducing the risk of progression, so routine eye examinations with your optometrist are important.

Glaucoma refers to a collective of eye conditions where the optic nerve has become damaged. Commonly referred to as the ‘silent thief of sight’, many symptoms of glaucoma develop so gradual that most don’t realize until significant vision loss has occurred. In fact, a person could lose up to 40% of vision without noticing.

According to the Canadian Ophthalmological Society, 800,000 Canadians suffer from glaucoma, yet only half are aware they have it. Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide, behind cataracts. While anyone can develop glaucoma, those 40 years of age and older are most at risk. Routine eye exams are an easy way to stay proactive in early glaucoma detection. Earlier detection means earlier treatment, which could mean less or completely avoiding vision loss. Currently, vision loss due to glaucoma is irreversible.
