Do you have type 1 diabetes (T1D)? If you have T1D and do not always know when you have low blood sugar and have needed help to treat your blood sugar, you may be able to take part in the VX20-880-101 Study. Men and non-pregnant women between the ages of 18 and 65 who are diagnosed with T1D may be eligible to participate in this clinical research study. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety, tolerability, and effectiveness of an investigational islet cell infusion, called VX-880. This study consists of a screening visit up to 90 days before receiving the infusion and a procedure to infuse the investigational treatment. You will need to attend follow-up visits monthly after the infusion for the first year and about every three months after for approximately five years. You will also receive several medicines before, during, and after the infusion of the islet cells and will be asked to take medicines for the entire duration of the study. You will be monitored throughout the study using continuous glucose monitor, which will be provided to you.

Can a glucose sensor improve your blood sugar?

A continuous glucose monitor is a sensor the size of two stacked quarters worn on the arm for 14 days. This sensor lets you measure your blood sugars with a swipe of your phone. We are interested in whether wearing these monitors can help get your blood sugars down to healthy targets.
In this research trial, half of the participants, randomly selected, will be provided with three FreeStyle Libre 2 sensors. All patients will get virtual visits with a diabetes educator to help improve their diabetes.

You may be eligible if you ..... have type 2 diabetes... have HbA1c (a measure of blood sugar control) higher than 7.0%... are not using insulin.

Participation involves two in-person study visits, each an hour long, and blood work. Compensation is provided for time and inconvenience.

This study is performed by researchers at the University of Alberta (Ethics ). Please see the poster to request more information about this research opportunity!

Are you, or your child, living with type 1 diabetes (including LADA) in Canada?

A research project called Type 1 Better recently launched the first registry of people living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) in Canada : The BETTER registry (Pro00121803).

The project is led by researchers, health care professionals and people living with T1D.

Registries already exist in the United States and in Europe, but this is the first one in Canada! A registry is a bit like a census but everything is confidential. The goal of this registry is to provide a more accurate representation of the reality of living with T1D, but also to have data to advocate for better access to treatments and technologies. To participate, anyone living with T1D in Canada, or whose child does, can complete a confidential questionnaire (adults can complete 2 if they wish) on the Type 1 BETTER website (around 15 to 25 minutes).

We believe that this is an indispensable tool to improve the lives of people living with T1D in Canada !

The website of the project also contains many resources specific to T1D such as weekly news, webinars presented by experts.

Discover the project and participate widely !
